CLUB CONSOLADOR DE DOS CAROS PRESENTS:

TIM OLIVE –  3 OF MILLIONS – KUSUM NORMOYLE

starring on our NEW IMPROVED PA SYSTEM!

TIM OLIVE (USA/jap)-     Osaka resident, born and raised on the Canadian prairies, began playing electric bass at age 12, fueled by 70’s hard rock.  A move to “the city” brought exposure to free jazz, early electronic music and the music(s) of Asia.   Efforts were made to accomodate these sounds within the range of rock instrumentation in the bands Nimrod and Soap-Jo Henshi, but eventually periodic rhythms and tempered pitches were jettisoned in favour of open forms, improvisation and exploration of the full sonic possibilities of steel strings and magnetic pickups, the number and diameter of strings varying periodically.
Extensive touring in North America, Europe and Japan has provided opportunities to play with a wide range of musicians, as well as long-term playing recording relationships with Jeffrey Allport, Shinichi Isohata, Fritz Welch, Francisco Meirino (aka Phroq), Nishikawa Bunsho (in the duo Supernatural Hot Rug And Not Used), as well as a duo with dancer Corrie Befort.
http://www.virb.com/shranu
http://www.myspace.com/timolive

3 OF MILLIONS- Brave turns, textural layering and a strong sense of united phrasing direct the music from intimate storytelling to epic intensity. This is music for the laughers, and the cryers. The rawest of emotions are sure to be unleashed. Keep your ears peeled and eyes open. In 3ofmillions, the piano trio format is morphed in to a new ultra-sonic beast. Rising from the embers of eclectic musical experiences including Triosk, Trio Apoplectic, the Splinter Orchestra, Pivot, Pure Evil Trio, and Holly Throsby Band. These influences are all called upon to improvise music that can, and does, go anywhere.
“a brave new world of sound.” **** John Shand, SMH

KUSUM NORMOYLE – Kusum is an improvising vocalist/electronic artist/alternative pop musician based in sydney. She works with voice and electronics for performance and installation. Kusum is also performing at TINA this year, get in for a preview with consolador, this exciting new sound experimentor is one to watch.

Emily Hunt & Raquel Welch
Hoochie Coochie

The fabled myths of death, the grotesque and the bizarre come to life in an excessively ornamented carnivale in Raquel Welch and Emily Hunt’s ‘Hoochie Choochie.’ Imaginary beasts and exaggerated caricatures are displayed in an
set-up which can best described as a behavioural study of the fantastic. Each scene features craftily constructed figures that are embellished with a nod to the crude elements of voodoo. But with a natural disposition towards the absurd,
Hunt & Welch’s make-believe underworld is nothing short of eccentric.

Come learn why wrestling is THE great artform of the 21st century while watching some of the most spectacular matches of recent years with Sydney’s greatest Pro-Wrestling expert, SHANE McGRATH.

Between the steroids and painkiller abuse, shitty working conditions, combat-zone mortality rate, and badly-acted, badly-written storylines, pro-wrestling may be literally the worst industry in the
world.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t awesome!

From corporate arena spectacle to low-budget shows in high-school gyms, this is a night not to be missed. Oh my God, not the Death Valley Driver onto the ladder!

This one’s going to be a slobberknocker, folks.

akemi, great western highway, medlow bath

Coming up at Akemi on this Sunday, 3rd August is a night of quality acoustic folk, featuring two acts: Lime and Steel, and Five Leaves Left.

Lime and Steel play original songs, with harmonies sung with distinctly Australian flavour.   They also throw in generous helping of Irish influence, and a touch of bluegrass influenced banjo and some sweet mandolin picking. (myspace.com/bensong)

Five Leaves Left features singer-songwriter and fingerpicking guitarist Nick Szenkuti. They do some fine folk/blues originals and covers, with a line-up that usually includes Mary Jones on flute, Simon Watts, on fiddle, with Ian
Morrison brushing up percussive goodness. (http://www.myspace.com/szentkuti)

We plan on having a session of Irish Tunes after the gig, so bring your instruments, all you diddly-people.

It’ll be an easy-going toasty loungeroomy gig.  BYO, and Akemi folks sometimes put on a pot of stew or the like, for which you are allowed make a small donation if you feel like clocking up some good karma.

plus the usual crazy djs

hira hira – we. are. all. xray. pricks. no. talent. fuck. off.

a friend of mine – Their mix of catatonic introspection and impassioned instrument thrashing makes their live performances a unique spectacle that “you couldn’t turn a deaf ear to… double unison vocals which droned into a sea of power chords, and a drummer that rocked hard enough to put holes in your ear drums.”
(fasterlouder.com.au) ” A Friend Of Mine played the sort of music you might bulldoze a neighbourhood to: rolling waves of brooding guitar grounded by frenetic, precise drumwork… their variation in intensity and unpretentious character made them a band worth catching.” (Inpress) They have since gone on to support a number of bands as diverse as Magic Dirt and Baseball, as well as improvising alongside Damo Suzuki.

tim dywer – I asked him for a bio but he never got back to me , so I am writing one for him. Tim reckons he sounds like suicide and he sort of does, I saw him playing with a jumper on his head and hammering a saxophone with a lot of smoke from a smoke machine. Was pretty good show. I think he is also doing some kind of master degree
in art or some shit like that down in canberra. Anyway I guarantee it will be worth seeing

This is a reading/discussion group taking off from an interview with Alex Foti called ‘Precarity and N/european Identity’, available online at http://www.metamute.org/en/Precarity-european-Identity-Alex-Foti-ChainWorkers Hard copies will be available at the cafe. Points for discussion: paid and unpaid work, squatting and tenant struggles. Sounds boring but will be fascinating no doubt.

Crowbar connections

A chance for people who are squatting, or want to be, or are interested in working on squatting-related projects, or don’t really care, etc., to meet, network, share skills, propose projects, speed date, the possibilities are endless…

And more random stuff if people come up with it.

Brave New Films and tenzenmen presents

Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism

“Outfoxed” examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News, have been running a “race to the bottom” in television news. This film provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public’s right to know.

The film explores Murdoch’s burgeoning kingdom and the impact on society when a broad swath of media is controlled by one person.

Media experts, including Jeff Cohen (FAIR) Bob McChesney (Free Press), Chellie Pingree (Common Cause), Jeff Chester (Center for Digital Democracy) and David Brock (Media Matters) provide context and guidance for the story of Fox News and its effect on society.

This documentary also reveals the secrets of Former Fox news producers, reporters, bookers and writers who expose what it’s like to work for Fox News.  These former Fox employees talk about how they were forced to push a “right-wing” point of view or risk their jobs. Some have even chosen to remain anonymous in order to protect their current livelihoods. As one employee said “There’s no sense of integrity as far as having a line that can’t be crossed.”

this is the last in the series of Brave New Films documentaries.  as per all their docos they are free to distribute and screen.  if you would like a copy of any of the dvds then drop me a line at tenzenmen.

Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price film screening

MGTVLE, 40 fitzroy street, marrickville
8pm $2 donation

Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price is the documentary film sensation that’s changing the largest company on earth. The film features the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to survive in a Wal-Mart world. It’s an emotional journey that will challenge the way you think, feel… and shop.

Released simultaneously in theaters and DVD in November 2005, the film has been seen by millions worldwide. Families, churches, schools, and small busineses owners have screened the film over 10,000 times and the world is taking notice. See the film, share it, and become part of the movement forcing companies to act responsibly.

see bravenewfilms.org to find out more about these doco’s and alternative media.

14th May 2021 – I came across a few cultural documentaries I thought others may be interested to see, so borrowed a projector and talked to the good people of Maggotville and set up these screenings – I think we did four in total.

Reminder – Public Forum Friday 29 February
Visiting US Labor Leader & Unions in the Anti-War Movement

Mark the date in your diary and come along for a great opportunity to hear about the US Labor Movement’s efforts resisting Bush’s war on Iraq and supporting workers and unionists inside Iraq.

Kathy Black, Co-convenor of US Labor Against the War (USLAW) and President of Coalition of LaborPublic  Union Women (CLUW), will be on a National Speaking Tour of Australia between 28 February and 16 March, when she will address the Iraq Peace Rally in Sydney to commemorate the 5th Anniversary of the Iraq War.

US Labor Against the War ( http://www.uslaboragainstwar.org/) has played an important role within the US mobilising labour movement support for the anti-war campaign, under the slogan “Unions Yes, War No”. USLAW have also made links and supported unions inside Iraq.

The Public Forum on Friday 29 February will be an opportunity for dialogue between Australian and US unions and to hear first hand about USLAW anti-war campaigns as well as the opposition to the Iraqi Oil privatisation laws from unions and workers inside Iraq. Kathy will give a presentation on the real costs of war and what this means for working people in the US and Iraq, following a recent paper by Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes showing that the total cost of the Iraq war to the United States will be $2 trillion or even higher.
