When I was immature I was a contrarian. Now that I am, at least, more mature I tend to embrace opposition. To be open minded is a struggle, to look at another’s opinion or viewpoint is a challenge, to question oneself… it’s an obligation. It’s not just our bodies that we have to keep moving but our brains too.

I’ve known people who delight in taking the opposite point of view in a discussion, simply to keep the debate interesting. Not a bad way of shaking up the brain cells!

I think it can be quite easy to argue in opposition if it something you believe but it takes someone special to be able to argue the oppostions point against themselves. I try to put myself in other people’s shoes, to try and understand their position better but sometimes I can also be close-minded, especially if I don’t have time to really think deeply about something.

I think we all can. Once upon a time we were taught as children to try and put ourselves in others’ shoes; nowadays it seems this teaching is lacking.
