Age Of Fight – 9th July 2022

We are the ‘Lord of the Flies’
This is where we stand
Making arbitrary decisions
Over who owns which piece of land

Unable to share our daily bread
Our garbage is other’s dreams
Pretending value on bits of paper
Nothing is what it seems

Is it just within our nature
To claim one’s way is right?
Past, present and future
A never-ending age of fight

It’s a good morning with mists descending
A light rain forms teardrops on the greenest leaves
A darkened dampness permeates the heart and mind
But we’re safe inside, taking it all in
It’s a lazy day of literature and brandies
Hours spent staring at crackling fires
A comforting smell of libraried shelves
Over shadows the comings and goings of the day

I am so happy and grateful that I could take time off school (and hopefully still get paid) for the last nine working days when I’ve had Covid. I feel like I have finally come out of the other side and have some energy back.

Am I just another white saviour
Riding in on my horse?
I don’t feel that way
But that’s expected, of course
When everyone I talk to
Is complaining all the live long day
It’s difficult not to offer advice
And to promote a better way
But is it arrogant to intrude
To believe my way is best?
Is it acceptable to leave well alone
And just let those problems rest?
Some days I think this
On other days I think that
I don’t know more than anyone else
Except where I’m at

You cannot change others, only yourself. Get ready to deal with every situation.

I gave up and got nothing
Gave my choices away to luck
Couldn’t be bothered to take control
As my life has become stuck
Watching my friends so happy
Travelling to faraway lands
I lost control of my destiny
And left it in other’s hands
If only I actually knew this
The truth that others have seen
Grabbing at the nearest cookie
Never wondering what might have been

When reality disobeys my rules, detectable levels of surprise, disappointment and frustration are produced.

OK, let’s stay calm, the doctors will know best
Can you go home and get yourself plenty of rest?
Or perhaps you’d like to stay in a lovely hospital bed
Very cheap with your insurance, that’s what the nurses said
I decided I’d die at home surrounded by my cats
Didn’t die in the end – no thanks to those stupid bats!

We may fancy that there might be a better universe, but we cannot conceive of a better, because our minds are the outcome of things as they are, and all our ideas of value are based upon the lessons we learn in this world.

Medicine and food declare the end
