The gale is not the danger, nor the weather.
We dare not be seen together.
This coast holds no time or place for ‘us’.
Grey storm billows round our skirts.
These rocks absorb our silent hurts.
The gale is not the danger, nor the weather.
We watched for them, their cold inspections,
Their tools to breach our skin’s reflections.
We dare not be seen together.
So let the surge take what it pleases,
Our love, lost to the salt-slick breezes.
This coast holds no time or place for ‘us’.

I love your interpretation, Shaun. It could be the tale of any forbidden love, but with the painting, there’s an added dimension.

Thanks Merril 🙏 I was struggling for inspiration alone so decided to look deeply into the painting.

Shaun you create a sense of mounting claustrophobia despite the wide-open setting, and the third stanza is chilling. The imagery suggests a more invasive kind of persecution. Moving from a poem of simple forbidden love to terrifying intervention – ‘curing’ identity – excellent piece🙌

I found that storms I experienced in Sydney were claustrophobic due to the once wide skies seemingly rapidly closing in.
