Shared with dVerse Poetics – rose. An ‘Afternoon Delight’ is a type of rose, apparently.
An afternoon delight used to be
a beer in a summer garden.
Music played through a window
with the sun hanging lazy into night.
Those tinted glasses of nostalgia
– what colour was that again?
Knowing that it may not be repeated
why continue to wish for it to be so?
As beer became a thing of the past
– a regret of wasted time,
an afternoon delight is a nap
now that the sun sets so quickly.
Today’s Daily Stoic poem:

Sometimes it is good to leave the beer behind – or whatever eventually stops us enjoying those roses and summer evenings – Jae

I used to love beer. In fact, I probably still do. I just don’t enjoy it anymore.

I like “the tinted glass of nostalgia.” We do tend to look back with a tint, and things we used to do we may no longer do.

as a fellow ex beer lover and drinker, I can definitely relate to this! Its been hard to find the same kind of (fake) euphoria that I used to get from drinking but doing the right thing in each moment (as the Zen Buddhists would say) has definitely improved my overall health and mental well-being! Thanks for sharing this poem great done, Shaun! 🩵

Yes, the improvement to overall health is probably the main reason I stopped. I do still drink occasionally, if I’m on holiday somewhere.

The first stanza had me reminiscing too! Gee, I think I miss those days!

Yeah. We miss them but can’t repeat them.

Can too! But without the lots of beer.

I like your spirit but it’s never quite the same. We make new ones though.

From the guzzling of beer in our youth to an afternoon nap in our later years. Yep….that’s how it goes in life 🙂 And I’d add, the taste buds shift and become more discerning…from beer to a delightful bordeaux!

Despite those glasses, I still insist that the good old days are happening right now.

I would like to but it makes me lazy and I kick myself in the following mornings.
