Grim Days – 13th August 2026

For twenty-six English years
never experiencing weather
—except those two weeks complaining about the heat
and that year of snow, not having to go to school—
grim days, followed by more grim days.

To Australia to enjoy another twenty-plus years
of all the weathers in one day, every day
—except snow, which only the rich could afford,
skiing around Kosciuszko National Park—
good days, followed by even more good days.

Then Thailand, for who knows how long,
where the weather is upside down
—winters are sunny and temperate,
summers, wet, wild and grey—
taking me home again.

Written for dVerse Poetics weather prompt and inspired by the depression felt on grey days, even here in Thailand’s hot rainy season.

Today’s Daily Stoic poem:

Take Charge And End Your Troubles

Did the things you fear come to pass?
The struggles came, but didn’t last
Take charge and understand prevention
End your troubles early with intention

  1. Sometimes our life path changes like the weather. I’ve lived in the south and the north and have experienced extreme weather but, I prefer the seasons of the north.

    1. The 50 weeks of grim grey rainy days of England certainly made those two weeks of sunshine feel very special. (I’m exaggerating but when going through it, it certainly felt like a looooong time)

  2. Shaun, if there is one thing we can never escape on Earth, it is weather. I prefer it to the sterility of space (imagining being a star voyager.)

The weather is going “bad” here in Michigan it seems. Summers much harsher winters much wilder.

  3. An interesting comparison of the weather in all the places where you’ve lived, Shaun!

The one time I was in England (London) was as a child, and we lived in Dallas, TX at the time. It was at Christmas time, and we were so cold from the damp, cold air–but also amazed at all the green.

    1. My wife and I were chuckling at the news of the heatwave in the UK. 33 degrees! Wow. We’re happy when it gets down to 33 degrees!

I remember a few 30+ degree days in the UK and I loved them!
