Once in a lifetime, just once
you will know not to be scared
of death, as he approaches in
the periphery. Calm before his duty,
he gently takes your hand and
whispers you away. All storms
begin to settle, your medals tarnish,
your children’s laughter fades
to a hum, as all your prizes begin
to disappear, with his promise
that this sorrow will be only once,
just once. Once in a lifetime.

Today’s Daily Stoic poem:

I think the calmness of death must be somewhat of a comfort, once it is your time. No need to carry everything, no need to worry, just let go. Until then, we continue, squeezing as much out of this one life as we can. Lovely poem.

Thanks Freya 🙏 I feel the life being squeezed out of me at the moment – it’s been a long semester. I want to get back to being the one doing the squeezing!

To reach that point and be calm about it is what we should live for I think… if something comes after it is just a bonus.

I’m trying to stay calm about it. Maybe that calmness will come nearer the time.

I agree with Freya, Shaun, that the calmness of death must be a comfort, and I hope that I can just let go and be taken gently by the hand. I think that when we reach a certain age, death becomes more of a friend than something to fear.
