Shared with dVerse Poetics, taking Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s Dead as inspiration and borrowing the line ‘strewn with time’s dead flowers’. Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó was Bela Lugosi’s full name.
Prompt: Write from inside an abandoned mansion after midnight. There is no obvious ghost—yet every room suggests someone has only just left.
Today’s Daily Stoic poem:

Nice twist on the Bluebeard story, Shaun.

Interesting! I didn’t know that story before but I see the connection 👍 Thanks Lisa 🙏

You are welcome, Shaun. Bluebeard’s story is deconstructed in Clarissa Pinkola-Estes’ book, Women Who Run with the Wolves. Each chapter deconstructs an old fairy tale.

Very tight…superb tension, and aliteration—this verse can be ‘heard’

Just like Lisa I thought of Bluebeard and his brides coming back to bite

It’s interesting that I don’t (or didn’t) know the Bluebeard story. Where is it from? Were there movies or books?

It is an old folktale from France (potentially Brittany)… which has been written down in many versions.

Love this especially; “strewn with time’s dead flowers and déjà vu.” Thank you so much for writing to the prompt! ❤️❤️

Thanks Sanaa 🙏 The sparse creepiness of the music helped with the aural tone of the writing. I used to scare the shit out of my friends playing this song in my bedroom with only a candle for light and sometimes weird things would happen, or so we imagined.

Great atmospheric piece – a striking metaphor the image of the ‘three incessant brides / seductive / and cold’ is particularly arresting. It’s reminiscent of the Fates, combining allure with existential dread 🙌
