Re: Memory – 15th February 1999

Email with TLJ

TLJ: : ok, so here’s what I think. I think that it is trying to read the files because I specified for it to auto detect the log file format.

S: So, if you turn that function off – is it OK?

TLJ: – once it detects it (say by running a report or if you specify log file format) then it seems ok. Also, if you select auto detect the log file format, then it takes 12 log files (4085Kb), but when i put in the 13th (4537Kb) it started using all the CPU.

S: Any ideas why – is it the number of files or the accumulated size?

TLJ: Proud of my research and troubleshooting skills?

S: Of course – I never doubted you babe. How are the others though – the ones who count.

Pooh – 14th February 1999

Email with TLJ:

S: I went to the library today and picked up some books for HJ. I also checked if they had The Tao of Pooh – the computer said they did but I couldn’t find it on the shelf. When they find it they’ll let me know. I did find though, the Te of Piglet, which is a bit of a coincidence cos on Monday Margaret gave me this print out of a Chinese word and it’s meaning – the word is De (the same word – different dialect/pronunciation). It means virtue and is part of Margaret’s name – Wen De. How’s that for coincidence? Hope your lunch was good and you had fun with your friends…

S: Hope your lunch was good and you had fun with your friends…

TLJ: was a bit shitty cause hari asked how i felt about people dating older men and i went on about all this shit about hating old men dating young women, and as usual, older white men dating young asian women. But then i felt really stupid, cause he was asking about ME dating older men, and I knew mich must have told him about me and you – She tells him EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!

S: Does that mean we are dating then? I thought I was just your regular root?! You know – how you tell me EVERYTHING!!!!!! So are they doing it or what?

TLJ: he was nice apart from that.
upset, tlj

S: Don’t be upset my little angel…come see me….

TLJ: Thanks for the cartoon baby, cheered me up – can’t believe you’re already sending me mail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (now why don’t you send me flowers????)

S: Well, you know I wanted to send you some on your first day – that’s why I asked you which floor you would be on. Of course, you weren’t too sure and I ran out of money…….but I still have ideas…..

TLJ: When i saw the CSC logo I thought they’d tracked me down and were going to make life hard.

S: What do you mean? Who’s they? Are you having paranoid delusions again….”I’m not paranoid – I know what you’re thinking….”

TLJ: Also, when I read the “watch out for this guy”, I thought it was the sleazy office worker

S: What sleazy office worker……????

TLJ: – every company has one

S: hmm???????????????

TLJ: Anyway, I’m feeling better now. Just remembered I have soccer tonight.

S: GO Team GO!

TLJ: Have a great day, tlj

S: Gets better with the first mail of the day from you…..

Sometimes I do – 13th February 1999

Email with TLJ:

T: > could someone send out an email to all the bits telling them what our group is then…i’m not sure my email got out…our email server is a bit shitty

S: That’s CSC’s mail server by the way (as I’m sure you’re aware of)
the server’s been pretty good recently – you seem to get my mails pretty quick – could be something to do with socs.uts??

T: See, they assume I am in their group

S: What ‘group’ are they talking about?

T: – i haven’t said anything – I hate this – I don’t want to be in ANY group, although sometimes I do.

S: Haha!

T: Anyway, been doing some more Webtrends investigating – CPU usage goes up because it is trying to access the log files – which are about 10-12 mb, and this is using up all the CPU.

S: What size is the CPU, memory, and virtual memory? I wouldn’t have thought that it would spazz as much as you have indicated if the log file is on the same machine.

T : When i changed the name of the log file, and webtrends could no longer find them, CPU usage went down.

S: So – how doesit know which file to look for just when you start it up. You know – I think maybe it’s getting the log file and trying to shove it into cache (what they term the database) and once it’s done CPU may go down. Can you try it with a much smaller log file and see if CPU settles down quickly?

T: Also tried to change the name of the file when CPU usage was 100% (on a hunch) – and just as I had guessed, the folder name couldn’t be changed because it was being accessed!!!!!!!!!!!!

S: You’re smart!

T: How can I fix this dilemma?? Or get around this problem???

S: Do you need to change the filename while WebTrends is accessing it? I think this would indicate that there should be only ONE log file (perhaps per month – so you may have to shut WT down only once a month to rename files). Otherwise you’d have to set up some batch process to end the WT process, rename the file and start WT again (would it know about the new filename -does it pick that up automatically?)

T: Meeting mich and hari for lunch at 1pm.

S: Have fun babes -i want a full gossip report.

Webtrends (again) – 12th February 1999

Email with TLJ:

S: Just a reminder about things to check today. Get the IP addresses and computer names of your machine, chris’s and the machine where you’ve installed WebTrends – oh and the intranet and internet servers would be good too. If you can find out which domains the machines are members of too (just NT), then cool. Also which domains they are actually logged on to. Check all the things that were in my last email. Check the size of the log files, do you still have the old log files you used on your machine – try using them on the one where you just installed WebTrends. Can you take the WT machine off the network? ie pull the cable out and log on locally – this might just rule out the machine doing some extra things on the network that is affecting the CPU. Try uninstalling the version of WT you have on your machine and install it again – see if it works – see if it still works OK on your machine. It does work on NT I guess? When you start Web Trends see which processes start at the same time in Task Manager. Hope you are feeling OK about work today. I’m sorry you had a bad day yesterday – I bet everyone is really nice to you today. Just be confident that you are doing a good job. I believe in you – now, you start believing in you.

TLJ: I’m really upset – I tried to check out that awesome cyber card you sent me, cause i got the email about it on the 3rd feb, which said the cards are kept for 7 days – only now I can’t get it. It can’t find it. Please send me another one.
please?
oh, and i forgot to tell you that dad and kath were on a current affair last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tell you about it later

Slack – 11th February 1999

Email to TLJ:

Hey babes, thanks for coming out last night. You’re a great person and good fun to be with. I was tired and hungry (and therefore cranky – keep me fed baby!) but felt much better later. The Necks where great – and I’m glad you enjoyed them too – I thought you would. Anyway, if you felt I was being slack to you then I apologise. I don’t wanna be slack to you cos you are a very important person to me and wouldn’t want to do anything to upset our relationship. I hope that you are OK today – not too tired and have a great lunch with Mich and Hairy (or whatever his name was!) What are you doing tonight? Would you like a ride home – if you can make it to Chatswood? Or just from my place? It’s always great to see you, talk and hang out. Love to you angel

Delilah – 10th February 1999

Email with TLJ:

T: That reminds me – haven’t seen This Life for ages, but people at work were talking about it last week, and I didn’t know it was on last night (repeats though).

S: I saw a bit of it last night but turned it off as it is crap really! Even though it’s better than most.

T: Anyway, looked at WebTrends again – and it kept not responding then running then not responding again – and CPU usage was very uneven. I copied the log files across to the server – and I think it’s running more smoothly now. I left a report running on it – I’ll check it later – I hope that was the problem.

S: Sounds good. But why would it be a problem across the network. It would be slower but not that slow. Would it be an issue in future? ie will it HAVE to run across the network? If so, then that should be the real test.

T: I’m sooo stupid, Geoff asked if the problem was the processor speed etc, or the fact that it’s running on NT Server, and I stupidly said it could’ve been the fact that it was running on NT Server when I knew darn well that wasn’t it – HOW STUPID AM I??????????????????????

S: It doesn’t matter – knocking Microsoft products is standard practice anyway! What do you think it is then?

T: Anyway, I feel soo stupid now, and now he must think I’m an absolute idiot.

S: I’m sure he thinks you’re damn cute…..

T: But if copying the files across doesn’t speed up the application, then I don’t know what to try next.

S: Let me know what happens….

T: Anyway, I’m kinda hungry and waiting for lunch – I want to go to the Art Gallery again, but not if it’s too wet.

S: I nearly got caught in the rain…..

T:Don’t feel much like having a late night or going out tonight, but will anyway.

S: You don’t have to go – you can just say your night got cancelled and go home if you want? I’m really tired even though i went to bed pretty soon after talking to you.

T: Hope Yvette or Steph don’t ring up tonight – I’m supposed to be out with them. I stupidly forgot – I should’ve said I was going out with uni people, cause they are going to the movies tonight. I’ll see……….

S: Look, don’t worry – just go home – I’ll see you some other time when you are not feeling so tired….

T: Catch ya, Hope work is going well.

S: Work is cool – but my back and necka nd arm are sore…oh and my knee! there’s a place that does massage for ten bucks – I might check it out after I get paid. Not much else here baby. Love ya sweety!
Shauny

Access – 9th February 1999

Email with TLJ:

S: Hey TLJ!!!
Wanted to talk more to you last night – I hope you went to bed after talking to me but I bet you stayed up longer, didn’t you????
I read some more of Kid Eternity – excellent read – I wonder if you will ever try and read a good story in the comic book form? A good story is a good story right?
Anyway – still not sure if I’m coming down today – I can’t get in touch with anyone – it doesn’t look good for today I’m afraid.
Hope you are having a fabulous time – I think I’ll call you soon…..
I may have to go back to the podiatrist again as my knee is hurting again…..oh well.
Love to you angel boy

T: Oi, I’m having trouble running WebTrends on our NT Servers – it uses up 100% CPU most of the time, and doesn’t respond.

S: What were you doing just before this? Does it run at 100% as soon as you open it or did you kick off some process first?

T: I don’t know what the problem is – I don’t know whether it has to load log files which are held on another machine

S: Which machine? The Intranet Web Server? Is the file in use? Does the user who is logged on have permission to access the log files? You are definitely pointing to the right place?

T: – I’ve mapped a drive to a zip drive somewhere else, but i don’t see why this should be a problem.

S: Is the zip drive doing any I/O that you can see – if it is then it’s a reasonable assumption you have access to the files and it could just be taking a long time. Why are the files on a zip disk? Why not on a hard drive somewhere?

T: Any ideas? Should I try troubleshooting?????????????????

S: Yes! that’s what you will be doing…

T: Just trying to use that term that you taught me.

S: Very good – remember computers is 20% knowledge 80% bullshit. You’ll hear a lot about the 80/20 rule.

T: Don’t know what I should do.

S: Go to lunch of course!

T: Help. Also, I want to know whether open toe shoes or boots will be in this season.

S: I think open toes was last season and boots will be back briefly until it’s back to the very casual flip flops!

T: And whether I should ask out this girl I like.

S: Of course not – homosexuality is against the will of God!

T: Confused.

S: and Gorgeous!

Good Morning! – 8th February 1999

Email with TLJ:

S: Hope you are feeling OK today after your weekend of drunken debauchery!
I also hope you can come out and play with me tomorrow night and go and see the Necks.
Are you doing anything tonight – maybe I can give you a lift home (not too late though – you don’t wanna get grounded!). Hey when’s your sis moving out? Oh, and I remembered why HJ called you a boy…..
Love to you angel
Shaun-ee

T: tell me now or i’m never seeing you again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

S: OK, well it was becaues eh hadsjor0e9^(*% 2347908-&)*(^ OH;lhjoiy……did you get that?

T: please – was coming back from the art gallery and wondering why he called me a boy.

S: Actually no real reason WHY he called you that it was more that I remembered what we were talking about.

T: Went to see art express at lunch and was going to see modern lovers – but i didn’t have time.

S: What’s modern lovers?

T: Also wanted to see the warhol exhibition at the musem of contemporary art – on march 6th, if you present your nokia mobile phone, you can get in free!!! so your mobile had better be a nokia.

S: I have a nokia. what day is march 6th? Do you want me to go or just my phone??

T: Still haven’t heard about tomorrow yet. Saw Katya’s drawing (nat’s friend). It was soo good – you’d love it.

S: I wanna see it. I wanna see you!!!

T: Why did Hj call me a boy???????????????????????????????????

BridgeWalk – 7th February 1999

Email with TLJ:

S: I thought you’d be really into this. What do you suggest we could do instead?

T: I hope you’re not mad, sad or upset that i thought we should do something else. It was really sweet of you to think of. I just thought we may be able to get more excitement for longer at the same price – maybe we could shop around.

S: I really wanted to surprise you with it. I’m not mad, sad or upset (I just miss you baby!!!). So you would like me to spend the same amount of money on us then, but do something else!! How could life get any more exciting than when we are around each other anyway! That is priceless and cost-effective.

T: I’m wearing an olive top today – it’s Sandie’s. I really, really love the colour.

S: Come show me. Where you going after work?

T: Anyway, di and them want to take a day off work so we can get away for 3 days sometime in March – but I’m not going to take the day off I told them. Proud of me?

S: Always. What did you say to them though?

T: anyway, seems they’ve been planning this for quite a while – and the bridge walk – totally without me, and they take it that I’m coming along even if I haven’t heard anything about it yet (well, that’s the impression that I get).

S: That’s because you are one of THEM (in their eyes)! It’s nice that they include you but I guess it would be nicer if they asked you. Actually, you’ve snubbed them a few times – maybe they’ll get pissed off with asking you? Anyway – come do something more exciting with me.

T: your groupie, tlj

S: Your zucchini
shaun
PS thanks for being my groupie!

Awesome – 6th February 1999

Email with TLJ:

S: Did I ever tell you how awesome you are?
HJ rang me this morning…..kinda….he was way cute! Can’t wait to see him on Saturday. I gotta come up with some new things to do with him – both at home and out – any ideas?
Thanks for the best night – I’m sorry I had to drag you home. I’m feeling bouncy and full of beans this morning – despite the lack of sleep – and who knows I may even go swimming this afternoon!
Awesome!Awesome!Awesome!
Love to you kitty-cat

T: Hey, I wanna come meet you in Chatswood when you get off work for a few hours.
But I don’t want to disturb you from swimming.
so what shall we do?
Mail me – what time are you getting off work, then I’ll come meet you – and if you want to go swimming, you can take me home.
See ya soon?

S: Miss you muchly this morning……..
Love to be wrapped in your love…..can we do it all again…..everyday?
Next Week:
8th – the Necks
9th – the Necks
11th – Hosemobile
12th – Hosemobile Cat Power
13th – Cat Power
I’m thinking of the 9th, 12th (hosemobile) and the 13th. Can you come with me to any of these?
Mail me, call me – everything me.
You know, I feel sorry for your uni friends at CSC – wish I could help in some way…..
Did I help you last night? I hope I did a bit. And sorry I bit your head off – you can have it back now……

T: You said you were coming to the city sometime this week, but I guess not. I really wanted to meet you for lunch and go see art express. If you don’t come see it with me, someone else will, or I’ll go myself. Please come see it with me.

S: I have to come down for a meeting on Mon or Tues – maybe we could catch the train in together whichever day it is – and I’ll see if I can stay around til lunchtime.

T: You were a great help last night – thanks. Sorry for being SOO annoying, but if you don’t like it, we can make like a banana and split.

S: I do like it – you can be as annoying as you like and I will still love you madly. (But don’t try it….!)

T: Anyway, am keen to see some of those bands (The Necks and Catpower), and if you don’t mind, I might ask some of my tour friends along.

S: That’s cool – why not. Do you think they will be funny about me (or will I be sitting somewhere else?)

T: I think you’ll like some of them (seeing as they’re Asian girls and all).

S: Yes, cos asian girls are intelligent aren’t they?

T: Oh, and that thing you forwarded to me – I’ve got a lot to say about it.

S: Compared with white/white ratio I think the whole white/yellow thing is blown out of proportion. People are attracted to all sorts of particular physical things – thinness, fatness, tallness, shortness, etc – why not a cultural one if it fits that person’s idea of beautiful? Do you think you would think the same thing if you weren’t Asian?

T: mail me, have a good night tonight, give Hayden a kiss for me.

S: I will give HJ a kiss from you. I miss you baby and wish I could come and see you today. I’m sorry if you got in trouble last night. Please come see me sometime on the weekend. And, hey, let’s do lots of mad exciting stuff too!
