A Pause – 22nd May 2025

Longer days,

a child’s return;

each breath, a moment

of life.

Tranquil dreams,

soft and silent;

shushed to doze, stilled by

slumber.

Soundless sleep,

a peaceful rest;

before the full stop…..

a pause.

Hushed by night,

lulled to the end;

forever resting

in peace.

Another attempt at dVerse Quadrille #224 – quiet, this time inspired by a couple of other existing entries, one from Punam, whose line I reversed in the third stanza and one from Lona, who introduced the Divided Quadrille and so I thought I’d give it a crack!

  1. Well you definitely mastered the Divided Quadrille, Shaun, and it’s always good to see how inspiration from other poets works out, especially the reversal of Punam’s line. ‘Longer days, a child’s return’ made me think of school holidays, and I love the use of sibilance in the lines:

    ‘soft and silent;
    shushed to doze, stilled by
    slumber’.

    1. The line ‘Longer days, a child’s return’ doesn’t quite express what I would like in that I was trying to grab on to the thought of moving into old age is a little like returning to youth. In our youth our days feel long and I anticipate old age days will feel long too, as we struggle with the ability to do all the things that we could in adulthood. I’m not sure how clear that explanation is either! Haha

  2. this poem is so beautiful!

    each day, culminating and slumber, each life, culminating and slumber, forever the time stretches on constrained by boundaries

    perfect subject for a beautiful divided Quadrille. to my knowledge, this is the first poem written in this little form by someone other than myself, and it is an honor to have it be so beautiful. it means a great deal! Thank you!
