We got that attitude! – 8th May 2020

I am so happy and grateful that I can eat falafel today at Gilbert’s.

To-do list

  • Smile and greet everyone – be friendly ✅
  • Keep lessons simple but try some variety ✅
  • Remember that other people have more stress ½

Today was a pleasant enough affair, fairly relaxed despite a couple of curveballs. I feel that the atmosphere is fairly chilled in this part of the school even though there is plenty of disorganisation. I didn’t get anxious or upset about anything and mostly kept my mouth shut – something which is made much easier due to wearing a face mask. I think I’ll keep wearing it even if I don’t need to.

We got that attitude! – 7th May 2020

I am so happy and grateful to be sitting by the river this morning for a coffee.

To-do list

  • Be nice to everyone you meet ½
  • Stay calm, stay quiet, listen well ½
  • Practice a mantra ‘it’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine’
  • Find out about teaching options but keep it simple! ✅
  • Drop by HomePro and check out weights ✅

I started off the day a little quiet and morose and even George’s positivity rubbed me a little the wrong way despite knowing he was right.

By the afternoon though I had turned things around in my head enough to be able to more quickly dismiss negative thoughts. I was polite to everyone I met though I realise I could be upbeat and smiling (even though wearing a mask).

I was calm and quiet though maybe I could have listened better. There Wasn’t really any occasion that necessitated using the mantra today, even though there were a couple of times I could have gotten wound up.

I got home quite energised, chopped up the fallen papaya and drank two beers which, due to the heat and humidity had very little effect. They did contribute to a more relaxed feeling though – getting back to some semi-normality is a welcome relief.

Tomorrow I should smile more and greet people in a more friendly manner. I have an idea of what I’m doing now work-wise so I can relax a little more.

I am so happy and grateful for the temperature today. There’s a cool breeze and no need for a fan or air-con.

To-do list

  • Photos ✅
  • Fill in cracks in concrete
  • Sort more CDRs ✅
  • Clear emails – esp Stoa ✅

I haven’t been particularly happy over the last couple of weeks – all the uncertainty in the world got me thinking too much.

Tomorrow I go back to school (for now at least) and despite really not wanting to go back to work, I think the routine will be useful for me.

I am already thinking about other things I can do ie. now motivated by one thing and provoking others.

This time has not been unproductive but has sometimes been a struggle. I’m motivated to get back into writing this (in my journal) again.

I am so happy and grateful for our Frangipani trees. Blooming and fragrant even in this drought.

I am fond of reading and listening but as to believing, no thank you, I can’t, and I don’t want to.

Anton Chekov, Love

To-do list

  • Finish CDs finally! ✅
  • Look through photos
  • Call George ½
  • Fill in cracks in concrete

Friday now. I talked with Hayden on Wednesday and he told me that his girlfriend had gotten pregnant. I pondered becoming a grandad but then he told me that she had got an abortion. I didn’t really have any reaction to this news – it’s not something I can change or choose to judge. He and his girlfriend will deal with it the best that they can.

I have been enjoying being in my room again though I’m still not 100% happy with the layout – it’s not quite comfortable yet.

I am so happy and grateful for my computer. It enables me to do so many things. I wonder if I could live without it? Of course, I could but I don’t think I want to.

To-do list

  • More 1994ever ✅
  • Record TCRAH – spend time on this one ✅
  • Watch less TV today ✅
  • More drawing

Today is Tuesday. I haven’t been writing in here because I have gotten myself absorbed in some good TV and by the time I come to bed it’s too late to turn on the light and write.

I feel like things are coming together more in my room – nearly got all the CDs in their cases – after more than two years! Now I’m trying to get rid of the CDRs and thinking about all the DVDs I have and what to do with them.

I’m hoping to keep up with all the backlog of 1994ever and other bits and pieces of writing. It’s been enjoyable to go through all those, thinking about the past. It still feels like it happened to someone else. Even brief glimpses of mundane things pop into my head and it makes me think about what times and events that I’m part of now will pop into my mind in the future.

Life feels quite mundane and predictable though I also feel quite happy and content.

The pleasures of the sight, the pleasures of the flesh, the vanities of life – 14th April 2020

“A hundred billion people who came before us, over ten thousand generations and everything they did for us, to build up our world…if we were to go extinct, through our own actions, or lack of doing anything about it, we would be the worst of those ten thousand generations.”

Tony Ord from the Ezra Klien podcast

I’ve gotten into the habit of listening to podcasts before I go to sleep (after reading comics and books before I go to sleep….it seems like I just don’t want to sleep!). The quote above, right from the very beginning of the podcast, shook me awake.

The podcast goes on to talk about real existential threats to our world and when I say our world, I really only mean the human world. Outside threats such as asteroids are very unlikely to be the cause. Internal threats such as nuclear war and pandemics are the most likely. Humans are the pox on this earth but we can redeem ourselves.

Each morning I receive an email with a quote and a writing prompt and I attempt to put down a few words of thought. The prompts are sometimes too thought-provoking, requiring too much time for me to consider (though consider them I should). This morning I got this:

Don’t go on discussing what a good person should be. Just be one.

Marcus Aurelius

Prompt
You are but one animal among trillions. Let the trivial fall away. Focus on the important.

My response:
I was thinking about this yesterday after a collection of different and varying inputs – watching a documentary about prostitutes struggling with drugs and taking care of a pet, watching cat videos, listening to podcasts about human extinction and reading Sufi tales with talking animals.
Why do humans think they are more important than other animals?
We will destroy ourselves.  So, focus on the important?  Decide what is important.

And, in the face of everything, this is a big question. If nuclear wars and pandemics are the most likely causes of the end of human existence – this feels like it must be important then.

Some will shrug their shoulders and give up, often promoting their view as a good thing. Others will sincerely do their best to encourage action from everyone and anyone. The worst will be those taking advantage of the situation to enrich their own lives.

I’m still thinking about and searching for the answer.

Gratitude Journal

I am so happy and grateful for a big rain. No need to water our garden today!

To-do list

  • Keep tracking down digital files on Soulseek ✅
  • Write another lesson
  • More 1994ever entries ✅
  • New blog entry (use an email for inspiration) ✅
  • More drawing?

Fairly well motivated today – could still spend less time watching TV and get out to my room before lunchtime but that’s OK. Not really much of anything else to report today.

Oh, last night it rained (after a big storm in the afternoon) and Amy woke me up (out of a wonderful sleep) at about 2am because our power was off. I realised that it was probably because the connectore box outside was exposed and water got on the electricity cables. I covered it as best I could, stood there in my underpants, ants crawling for cover too.

We turned the power back on and it stayed and I fell back into bed. So, this afternoon I savoured a snooze in front of the TV listened to a talk about Ram Dass.

I am so happy and grateful for my Gloomy Bear mug which I’ve had for many years now. It reminds me of my past and my happy history.

To-do list

  • Must finish that lesson in the morning. ✅
  • Don’t watch TV until the afternoon.
  • Sort more CDs. ½

(It’s Friday now!) Finally, I have a little return of motivation.

Yesterday was our 10th wedding anniversary and we had a nice time at home, having spent time preparing a nice environment, as if we were out somewhere more fancy than our dining room. Amy did most of it with me working under direction. She has a good eye for design and detail. 10 years – mostly happy and content. Any rough rides smoothed over by our caring natures.

I finally finished another lesson plan, sorted some CDs and did one or two other things in my room. Tomorrow I’m thinking of playing some video games but wondering how much of a time suck that will be. If it’s a time suck that brings happiness then it’s not a big deal.

In the morning I also want to talk with George and see what his thoughts are on teaching online. I’m not sure how it will work when we have to encourage speaking. I’ve been writing my plans for students to work in pairs. How can that work? I’m curious about the possibilities though. It could be good in the way of learning new methods and developing ideas around the technology.

To-do list

  • Record and plan more TCRAH
  • Sort some CDs

A lazy beery day. I’m still not really enjoying alcohol much these days – it interferes with my ability to read, write and watch (and follow) TV. I should just drink at social occasions but of course, there are none of those currently. So, anyway, I didn’t get much of anything done today.

I am so happy and grateful that Uncle’s repair shop is open so we can get our flat tyre fixed.

22nd Mar 2023 – Happily, old leathery uncle is still there.
