Taking Stock – 9th August 2024

Are you sick and tired of the same old thing
Or are you happy enough?
Tell me
When does so much become so little?
When does too little become too much?

It feels like you’ve been here before
These are familiar words you sing
Wheels spinning
Stuck on the rat race treadmill
Are you sick and tired of the same old thing?

A trophy wife and trophy life
Surrounded by all this glittering stuff
Are you empty?
Is that a constant nagging inside
Or are you happy enough?

I have so many questions
Are you certain of all that you see?
Never wrong?
I don’t believe everything that you
Tell me

The Joneses are growing bigger
Your ego inflexible and brittle
Tired of waiting
Believing it’s always your turn
When does so much become so little?

Your debt to yourself is catching up
Your life is empty (as such)
Left with no thing
Just sand slipping through your fingers
When does too little become too much?

Today I’m feeling:

A little better today after all that sleep yesterday.  I ended up waking a little early this morning, took a while to get myself going but my first two classes were fun and easy.

I feel freaking hot though, my body seems to be working overtime to get rid of whatever is making me sick.  No fever though.

Today I’m grateful for:

Getting through the day in reasonably good shape. I was tired but energised again after another bowl of Pla Tom from Chef Amy. I think I’ll sleep well tonight if I can keep this little cough under control.

The best thing about today was:

On my way to my last class, I found 4 of the students that I had penalised for not submitting work yesterday furiously writing it all out in the canteen. I stood over them for about a minute and they were so focused they didn’t realise I was there.

When they all looked up they gave me a half-upset and annoyed look, along with an ‘ok, I fucked up’ half-smile.

They were wonderfully behaved in my class today and we all had a good time.

What was out of your control today and how did you handle it?

I was all set to teach in my normal room with aircon this morning when another teacher came along and kicked the kids out.  We easily found another room but unfortunately, without aircon.

To be honest, the aircon doesn’t make that much difference when a room is full off sweaty teenagers (and a sweaty old man!).

In the past, I might have let this sudden change bother me but now I can deal with it easily.

Something I learned today?

I learned that the US Anti-Doping Agency, which monitors for performance-enhancing drugs in sports, let off offenders and allowed them to keep competing so long as they dobbed in other cheaters!

This same agency has now accused the Chinese swimmers of being drug cheats at the Olympics, even though they were tested 3 times more than any other country and passed every test.

The anti-China rhetoric has jumped the shark.

I took this picture because earlier in the week, Baipad had alerted me to a Facebook auction with this Gloomy Bear plushie. I bid 220 baht and won and here he is sitting on the shelf next to my bed.  It gives me the opportunity to give back the plushie that Baicard gave me on Teacher’s Day 4 years ago and had been sitting there collecting dust ever since.

We’ll Be All Right – 25th March 2024

Get ready for the struggle
Get up and get strong!
Don’t waste time on the puzzle
If all the pieces are wrong

Injustice sits in the heart
Sending signals to the head
Ignore them from the start
Choose to grow instead

The world is not unkind
Neither is it cruel
Fast forward, not rewind
The correct use of the tool

2nd Jun 2024 – Submitted to the Word of the Day Challenge

Today I’m feeling:

I’ve got some energy today, mainly through having ideas for lessons for next semester, which I need to focus on this week in preparation.

I just hope that what I’m working on is suitable for the students and not above their level.

I sometimes overestimate how skilled the students are and as this is my first time teaching grade 12 I have some reservations.

Today I’m grateful for:

Cap being able to come home from the vet.  He hates being there as he is a princess scaredy-cat a lot of the time.

I doubt he slept much for the last three days but the saline has helped stabilise his blood levels and hopefully, he soon gets his appetite back.

The best thing about today was:

Getting on a roll with my lessons.  I checked with the grade 12 teacher from last year and they were very supportive of what I was hoping to teach some of these students.

What was out of your control today and how did you handle it?

I talked to Kru Mai about changing one of my classes so that they matched the other classes in that grade and he said he will look at it.

But in the process of that conversation, the annual discussion of integrated study came up again and our grade 7 and 10 classes may need to follow that format.

I argued against this unless we are given the lessons to teach (which is not likely).  Every year they try to implement this and it’s always been shot down but it looks they are going to try and muscle it in somehow this time.

Also, any rejigging of our classes may also mean I don’t end up teaching the grade 12s that I just spent all day working on lessons for.  I asked if that could be left alone because I hope that I can get this opportunity to test out my skills and abilities, as well as the students.

Something I learned today?

USA TikTok users said that they were worried if the company was sold to a US corporation, believing that it would be more censored and restricted than it is currently as a subsidiary of a Chinese company.

Amy asked me to do many little things for her this evening and I’ve done them as required, even though it interrupted things that I was doing.

I took this picture because the full moon was looking rad as I went out to help Amy in the teaching room. She has plans for it but I’m not sure exactly what yet.

Hate That Smile in Holland

You want gossip! Here’s what’s on my mind right now. Write it down, clear it out, forget about it – here’s the rub.

Spoke to Rich from Eastleigh a couple of days ago and had a cool chat, Rich being more forward than usual and telling me what he’d been up to. Anyways he mentioned Fatty had been in touch to try and speak to Rob. Rob not being there, Rich had a quick chat with Fatty saying he should get in touch with me, or that maybe I should get in touch with him. According to Rich, Fatty didn’t say anything to that and when Rich mentioned about going up to some of the gigs in Southampton, Fatty replied ‘maybe after September’. Rich was rather taken aback by this apparently and we can only assume that he’s waiting for me to leave this country before taking up again with our mutual friends.

When Rich told me this I just said ‘Oh well, no good to harbour hatred’ and shrugged it off, but afterwards it really got me down. It’s not nice knowing someone out there hates you to the extent of wanting to see you go away completely. It’s upsetting and I’m not afraid to admit it. I’m very sensitive to these things (as you may have worked out by now anyway). It also makes me angry because I have not done anything wrong and my hater (Fatty) can’t even come and talk to me about it.

Okay, I’m saddened because this person can’t deal with their problem, can’t handle their emotions and can’t be honest with me about it. Remember, last time I spoke to Fatty, we left on amicable terms and he’d be in touch (also remember I don’t know his new address or phone number – Yes, I could get both if I really wanted to!) And now the turnaround – his problem is not my problem.

If I met him now I would talk to him like nothing has happened (in fact nothing has happened has it!?) and it really is a shame for him that he hasn’t been to see me in the last six months and a shame he probably won’t see me again after September. For me, however, it is not a shame. I feel like I’ve cut out a poisonous sore, an infection. Close the door on a chapter of my past, one which turned sour, especially at a critical time for me emotionally, with Steve passing away.

I am stronger. My character will carry me through this and I can only hope one day Fatty can see how foolish and stubborn he has been. Good luck old friend, remember, happiness is only just around the corner. So there it is. Now I can forget about it. Will write you some more later.

I feel great, let’s celebrate
It’s a sunny day, let’s dance and play
Never fear, love is here

Poems on this day – 22nd September 1988

I Hate The Kids

I hate the kids, they don’t rule
Fuckin’ kids should be kept at school
Make it my decision when they should leave
Make the kids have to believe
That the world is wrong and I am right
That you have to put up a fight
And when you’re doing something for yourself
Make sure it’s helping someone else

Let Me Down

Don’t you ever let me down
I’m sure I would fall apart
Don’t ever leave me now
Because you would break my heart

Wrong

You know those days
Everything seems to go wrong
The world turns upside down
And you don’t seem to belong
TODAY – FEELS LIKE THAT
