Created through the union of two, Daniel Noort on guitar and Kurt Bugden on drums, Mickey Gloss are a 2 piece musical outfit that are simple in their mission ‘To give back to the music’. Mickey Gloss take what they have learnt from bands
past and present to create a sound that rejoices in the process of life. Think cicada chirps and whale noises that wake the dead and you come close.

currently in an improv band (this is the only way to describe it) titled The Nihil Spiritual Orchestra. The band is currently on hiatus, but this is as a result of nothing having been organised since i began my last intensive year of study at uws. Ive been lucky enough to begin B.Music Hons studying with Caleb Kelly, so ill plug the goods that that entails. My musical focus these days are in drone and glitch, and i have continued to move away from the harsh noise that i began fostering
early 2007, to try and achieve more relaxing soundscapes despite high decibel levels. My interest is in combining the now-time effect of unchanging frequency spectrums, whether they be pitched or not, and combining this with untempoed, unpulsed rhythmic attacks, inspired by ambient, noise & doom, and glitchcore and skipping cds respectively.

bad news is that daighila got pulled by immigration in melbourne and sent straight back home to malaysia.  we’ve had no contact with them so don’t know the details for sure but basically their tour isn’t happening, except to say that we’ll try and still have the shows with local bands and all proceeds being sent to the band to help with their expenses.  we’ve tried to pull down everything online about the tour as we’re certain immigration will be persuing the issue.

ok – for sydney this means sunday afternoon at dirty shirlows is cancelled.  we’re still planning to go ahead with thursday may 8th at 34 murray street with an amalgamation of the line ups.  please come and check it out and donate as much as you can.  the band have probably lost in the region of $6,000 and having to quit their jobs to come here they will be desperately short of money (plus not being allowed back here for 5 years).

23rd May 2021 – I always warned bands about the best way to get through immigration in Australia due to it’s draconian rules about earning money and tax avoidance – doing things legally involves copious amounts of paperwork and a fee that would never be recovered for the types of artists I worked with. So, never fly into Perth or Adelaide and never arrive in the evening – always try to arrive as early as possible – that’s when it’s the busiest as most airports don’t allow flights to land until 6am usually. If you can, arrange a sound engineer with a story that the band is here to record at their studio (essentially indicating that they are employing the services of Australians). Never tell them the correct name of your band as smart officials will net search for show listings. Have a person ready at the airport with exactly the same story as the band. In the case of Daighila, they flew into Melbourne arriving in the evening and it seems that they were actually pulled up with a couple of other people on their flight and those people were entering illegally to work and it was just bad luck that the four guys in Daighila were assumed to be with them. I was in Sydney at the time – I hadn’t organised the tour but just the Sydney shows. We couldn’t talk with the band and on that evening we had no idea what was happening with them. They were flown back to Kuala Lumpur the next morning, now jobless and thousands of dollars out of pocket. The story made national radio, for which I was interviewed outside the benefit show at Louies. We managed to raise $370 for them that night. I am still close friends with 3 of the guys in the band and try to see them whenever I visit Kuala Lumpur.

13th June 2021 – While looking around for other things I came across this article (written by Nick from the band McClane, who I actually listened to today, just by chance, though wondering why I had sold all the copies I had of their demo and never keeping one for myself) which includes a message from Daighila originally posted on MySpace and some lively discussion in the comments section. It is amazing to see how upbeat and positive the band where despite the shitty situation. Taken from the Canberra based Riot Act page:

However, thanks to our friends in the Immigration department, the band was detained in Melbourne and interrogated for 6 hours about their work intentions in Australia. The following is a message from the band that was posted on their myspace.

“Dear friends…yes, we were sent back home from Melbourne by the Australian Immigration after being separated and interrogated for 6 hours and after being detained in their detention centre for another 24 hours. They ‘assumed’ that we came to find jobs and become illegal workers. Despite the lack of proof to convict us and the fact that we’ve already booked a ticket back from Brisbane, they insisted that we allegedly came to find jobs like the other groups of Malaysians who were detained prior before we arrived. They also say they believe we came here to work because we carry small amounts of cash in our wallets. But we explained it was a safety precaution and we had a bank account with sufficient money in it. We even presented our bank card. We also presented proofs that we have stable lives in Malaysia. But it was all ignored. Alas, they cancelled our visas with the reason that we couldn’t convince who they called the ‘decision maker’ (whoever that was…) that we were actual tourists and we could support ourselves during our stay in Australia. As a last resort we gave them our friend Juzzy’s number who organized our tour. They called and told him that we explained he was going to find us jobs and they then told us that Juzzy explained he’s going to find us jobs! Clearly they tried to provoke us to admit that we came to Australia to find work. We demanded a phone call but they said, “You can only call Malaysian Embassy, but nobody would probably answer because it’s already late.” We still demanded that call and they say we can call after the interrogation but unfortunately, we were never given the chance to call. It was absurd and even the staff of the detention centre couldn’t believe what just happened to us. But they say things like this always occur….even Kris Dayanti was sent back without a reason once…hahaha. We took our chances, rolled the dice and got a little unfortunate, I guess.

Although we didn’t make the tour, but we did make new friends at the detention centre. If any of our new Malaysian friends in the detention centre is reading this, never give up!! To my Israelian roommate, thank you for watching over us. You never did give us your name. =(

We would like to show our deepest appreciation and gratitude to Juzzy, Shaun, Alex, Lena, Yeap, Lawrence and all our Australian friends who’s helped, waited, tried calling us, tried to let us out and everything…..we all did our best. And not forgetting our Malaysian friends who supported us, sent us, and picked us up at the airport. We really appreciate everything.

After all that had happened, whether it’s a case of discrimination, racism, or tyranny, we still believe in global DIY connection and friendship because no ones to blame but the discriminating system we are forced to submit to. Yet, we will never give up. ”

Thankfully no one was imprisoned, however a lot of people organising the shows around the country and Diaghila themselves were left out of pocket due to the shows not continuing. A benefit show will be conducted next weekend, more details soon.

Visiting US Labor Leader & Unions in the Anti-War Movement

Mark the date in your diary and come along for a great opportunity to hear about the US Labor Movement’s efforts resisting Bush’s war on Iraq and supporting workers and unionists inside Iraq.

Kathy Black, Co-convenor of US Labor Against the War (USLAW) and President of Coalition of LaborPublic  Union Women (CLUW), will be on a National Speaking Tour of Australia between 28 February and 16 March, when she will address the Iraq Peace Rally in Sydney to commemorate the 5th Anniversary of the Iraq War. 

US Labor Against the War ( http://www.uslaboragainstwar.org/) has played an important role within the US mobilising labour movement support for the anti-war campaign, under the slogan “Unions Yes, War No”. USLAW have also made links and supported unions inside Iraq.

The Public Forum on Friday 29 February will be an opportunity for dialogue between Australian and US unions and to hear first hand about USLAW anti-war campaigns as well as the opposition to the Iraqi Oil privatisation laws from unions and workers inside Iraq. Kathy will give a presentation on the real costs of war and what this means for working people in the US and Iraq, following a recent paper by Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes showing that the total cost of the Iraq war to the United States will be $2 trillion or even higher.

Lecter Macabre

During the 4th World War, the elemental nature of science was changed and formed a new kind of music. People over the last 7 billion years have argued about it’s origins and small rodents have fallen asleep to the tonal variation it creates. ARE YOU AWAKE? Lecter Macabre eats food, breathes air and drinks liquid. They are two men. One is a member of Sydney group TRIANGLE. He is the mouth sound. He is Dr. Lecter. The other is the former member of a radio show on 2SER known as Music For Big Game Hunting. He waves his hands and creates magic sounds from the antenna. He is Dr. Kklarence S. Macabre.

Hinterlandt (germany)

Hinterlandt was founded by Jochen Gutsch after years of playing in underground bands such as Feedback Recycling, Buckethead (the German band), Professor, Home Of The Lame, Suckspeed, and others. Jochen moved from Hannover/Germany to Sydney/Australia in 2000 and relocated to Bonn/Germany in 2004. Hinterlandt moved along. Hinterlandt’s output is constantly changing. Initially a wild experimental music project, Hinterlandt soon embraced electronic music as a key aspect of production. Carefully, vocal lines and guitars were introduced, and before you knew it, there was a bunch of semi-electronic pop songs. Recently, some unexpected heavy riffs and pounding drums could be heard outside secret rehearsal locations, so the next change might be right around the corner.

Hinterlandt Live Incarnations

Phase III (Current): Hinterlandt is a rock trio, helped by loud amplifiers and heaps of old-school effect pedals. Jochen Gutsch on guitar, vocals and trumpet is accompanied by old friends Felix Gebhard (Home Of The Lame) on bass and Hilmar Voigt (ex-Buckethead) on drums.

Phase II (2004-2006): Hinterlandt operated as a one-man band playing left-of-centre indietronics, with multi-instrumentalist Jochen Gutsch as the only member. About 60 solo shows were played in Lisbon, Helsinki, Cologne, Rome, Berlin, London, Hamburg, Amsterdam and other cities. Solo performances might still happen occasionally.

Phase I (2002-2004): Hinterlandt started playing live as an improvised collective, featuring up to 20 musicians around Jochen Gutsch. About 20 shows of decidedly experimental sound/ambient/noise music were played in Australia.

10th May 2021 – What’s Cool and Unusual was a mailing list for mostly underground DIY music events happening around Sydney. I started putting it together to make it easier for folks to find out about shows that were usually only promoted by word of mouth. Many of these shows were in illegal spaces and at certain points I had to cull the email list and people then request to be added again with a statement of how they knew me. All this in an effort to keep ‘authorities’ out of your fun.

What decides your vote?
Indigenous Rights and Reconciliation
With the 2007 Federal Election in front of us, this sheet was put together to show the stance of the major parties, and some of the minors, in regards to Indigenous Rights and Reconciliation.
If the position of Indigenous Australians within our lucky country is an important issue in deciding how you will vote, then this sheet will help you send a strong message to the Government, whatever it may look like in a week’s time.

Liberal Party/ National Party Coalition (Government)
The Coalition track record as custodians of the Australian Government show:
• A commitment to singling out Aboriginal people for the withholding of welfare payments, making supporting families even more difficult for already vulnerable households
• A commitment to a referendum on acknowledging the role of Indigenous Australians in a Constitutional Preamble
• A willingness to suspend the Racial Discrimination Act in order to implement racist and unfair policies on Australians
• Abolishing the democratic voice of Indigenous Australians by dismantling ATSIC. It needed improvements, but was instead dumped and replaced with… nothing
• Under funding and complete disregard for Aboriginal community managed and run services, such as Health Services
• Mal Brough and John Howard arrogantly claiming to have solved cyclical poverty, social disadvantage and the post-colonial disadvantage of Indigenous minorities… overnight with cups of tea at John’s house
• A willingness to further urban disadvantage by using money from existing urban development programs to fund new remote programs rather than providing new funding for new initiatives

Labor Party (Opposition)
Whilst the Labor position is more respectable than that of the Liberal/National Coalition, the stance of current leader Kevin Rudd is worrying. To see the Labor Party that introduced “Self Determination” policy to the Commonwealth Government, the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and of the “Redfern Park Speech” of former party leader and Prime Minister Paul Keating now supporting the ill-conceived, irresponsible, racist and under resourced Northern Territory Intervention is a major concern.
The Labor policy positions include:
• Federal Labor offers bipartisan support to a commitment for constitutional recognition, regardless of the outcomes of the Federal election
• Labor values the symbolic importance of a national apology and commits to reconciliation as a vehicle for healing and justice in Australian society
• Support for Howard’s harmful Northern Territory Intervention, with the exception of the suspension of the Racial Discrimination Act.

The Greens
Of the parties represented on this sheet, the Greens have the most progressive policies on Indigenous Rights and Reconciliation and the strongest commitment for self determination for Aboriginal people.
From the Greens Policy Snapshot booklet, the Greens commit to:
• Back the plan to reduce the gap in life expectancy and achieve equality of health and wellbeing within a generation
• Support a treaty that recognises the prior occupation and sovereignty of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
• Make a formal apology to the stolen generation and increase support to Link-Up and counselling services
• Support fair compensation where property has been taken or wages and benefits withheld
• Make Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s health and education a national priority
• Fund a 10 year Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander housing plan
• Support the formation of respective bodies elected by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Family First
Whilst Family First propose measures to support Aboriginal families and support an increase in funding to Indigenous services, they also:
• Support the withholding of welfare payments from Indigenous families, thus making it harder for households to provide for young dependants. Proponents of this policy hold struggling families as the perpetrators of social disadvantage and exclusion, rather than the victims in need of support
• Propose the removal of Aboriginal Shire Council management of community stores providing services to remote communities, services that would otherwise be untenable
• Support Howard’s racist and ill-conceived Northern Territory Intervention

One Nation
One Nation continue their generally divisive policy positions with the following on Indigenous Rights and Reconciliation, from their Federal Policy Statement Summery:
• One Nation will abolish multiculturalism and the Racial Discrimination Act, whilst promoting assimilation
• One Nation reject Native Title and the recognition of Aboriginal Rights to land prior to European settlement
• Rejection of the title “Indigenous Australians” for Australia’s first people on the ridiculous basis that it excludes settlers from the First Fleet
• A denial of the genocide of Australia’s Indigenous peoples, claiming only 118 Aboriginal people were killed at the hands of white Australians and European settlers in the face of irrefutable evidence to the contrary

15th May 2021 – This looks like the first time I had to cancel the Cool and Unusual subscriptions as there seemed to be too many instances of venues and shows getting shut down and there may have been infiltrators on the list as subscriptions were originally open to anyone. A little paranoid maybe but I wanted to protect our little amazing scene for as long as possible.
