‘FOREVER THE MOTION’
An Audio Visual Collaborative Collision
Featuring Robyn Wilson, Jack Dibben, Anthony Garvin, Jordana Maisie, Kirin J
Callinan & Morning Stalker

Sunday 17 May 2009
6pm
Black & Blue Gallery
302/267 – 271 Cleveland Street, Redfern

View of Courage is proud to present ‘Forever the Motion’, an audio visual collaborative performance featuring a unique cluster of highly progressive Sydney-based artists and musicians – Robyn Wilson, Jack Dibben, Anthony Garvin,
Jordana Maisie, Kirin J Callinan and Morning Stalker. Incorporating original compositions in music and sound design, video art, costume and movement, just 100 tickets will be released for the event, one that is set to be a cataclysm of
intense visual beauty and aural splendor.

Each individual creative holds a solid grounding in the Sydney art and music milieux, with a diversity of backgrounds that lay rich the context from which the forms and messages of the evening will transpire.

The key performance ‘Forever the Motion’ will feature Robyn Wilson (vox, costume, movement), a multi-disciplinary artist and musician who grounds the conceptual basis of the headline performance, as her personal journey shapes it.
This project embodying the next evolution in her ongoing fascination with the marriage of audio and visual practices into one momentous, multi-dimensional experience.

The original score also features the composition and performance of musician Jack Dibben (guitar, live fx), whose superb experimental approach invests heavily in a unique, improvisational sound aesthetic. Plus the remarkable
Anthony Garvin (live fx, sound design), whose production expertise brings a transformative ability to process and shape sound as it is created.

The video element of the key performance will feature the new media and electronic artist Jordana Maisie, whose interactive approach, exemplified throughout her video and sound works, will underpin a temporal association
between the aural, visual and physical realms.

The nature of the piece has a basis in continuity and cyclical progression and the correlation between expressive media and artistic interpretation.

Across five immediately consecutive movements, the performance elaborates experiential abstractions of the process of self, in action and progression. It attempts to explore the inherent balance of impetuosity and inevitability in our
decisions and the ways in which they ramify. Highly personal in its motivations, ‘Forever the Motion’ extrapolates the subjective mapping of an emotional experience in terms of transferable universals: black and white, sound and
silence, light and dark, perfection and defacement, stasis and motion, shattering and coalescence. These pairs are not binaries but continuums along which the five movements flow gesturally and conceptually.

The blurring of roles, boundaries, media and authorship, that underlie the examination of process and progress enacted imbue ‘Forever the Motion’ with a vitality and originality that places this special collaboration in an interesting position in the Sydney art scene.

Also featuring on the night, as an epic solo act, will be the strikingly distinguished, increasingly prominent Kirin J Callinan, a captivating musician-performer, of eminent Sydney band Mercy Arms and the explosive incidentalists Fashion Launches Rocket Launches. Beautiful, stirring, undeniable

  • Kirin is a vital figure in the current Sydney creative landscape. His approach to his shows “offer me a gig, I’ll give you a performance” speaks for itself.

Plus experimental, ambient soundscape 3-piece Morning Stalker made up of Morgan McKellar (guitar, live fx, vocals), Simon Oh (bass sax) and Marc Chomiki (drums) will lay forth the first layer of aural carpet throughout the unique and
splendorous space of Black & Blue Gallery.

There will be a live sound and video recording captured on the night, to then be produced as an independent audio visual piece due for release late-August. It is with great pleasure for View of Courage to announce that the sound
recording will be mixed and mastered at Studios 301, Australia’s most prestigious recording studios.

$10 entry with “Kullucinations” 3 inch / $8 without

16-year-old bedroom urchin Eugene Ward is probably better known through his instrumental hip hop outings as Mazzadius, which, at the tender age of 14, landed him on high rotation at Sydney radio station FBi, and launched beat-making enterprises with musicians as wide-reaching as Madvillain collaborator Stacey Epps.

Apparently bitter at the (musical) world he’d operated in previously, Eugene, under the new moniker Maitreya Kali, has come up with a contemporary bent on the kind of vinyl-based ambience that Touch and Kranky luminaries such as Philip Jeck and Keith Fullerton Whitman have made their names from. I’m hugely thrilled to have the opportunity to let the results of this, “Kullucinations”, onto the world, via 3 inch CD-R.

Also playing is the wonderful Cleptoclectics, the primary musical project of sound designer Tom Smith, whose contribution to Feral Media’s Powwow series revealed a juicy balance between pop sensibility and sampling genius. Clepto will have a 3 inch on HellosQuare later in the year.

FourPlay String Quartet cellist and host of Utility Fog on FBi Peter Hollo brings us some solo cello noises as Raven, whose appearances have been almost as sporadic as, and potentially of similar quality to Scott Walker’s output since the mid 80s. A 7 inch with American cellist Aaron Martin on sound&fury’s passeridae series will also arrive later in the year.

This event will be hosted by the wonderful Dirty Shirlows in Marrickville’s warehouse quarter.

the NOW now returns to the Blue Mountains with a very special performance. Not only are there amazing international performers, but it will be also powered by solar energy! Thanks to Eden Ottignon for the use of his solar generator.

Brisbane-based Daiji Igarashi plays a final performance before he leaves Australia to live in Shanghai.
Hewill also be joined be local Blue Mountainer Adam Sussman and post-local Blue Mountainer Rory Brown.

Jeff Henderson from New Zealand performs solo banjo/woodwind/etc. This should be stunning!

Daiji Igarashi was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1983. Since about 2001 he has actively developed music centered on free improvisation, and expanded the possibilities of the electric guitar by innovating various sound effects.
For 3 years together with Yusuke Akai and Joel Stern in Brisbane, Igarashi was the co-curator of Audiopoolen Social Club. APSC is an artist-oriented, freeform, sonic but sensorially promiscuous beast that bewtween 2006-2009 ran over eighty DIY happenings in a concrete storage shelter in West End, Brisbane. APSC had been hosted various international and interstates artists.
In March of 2009, Igarashi was the executive producer of the three days music festival, Ready Aim Fire – Audiopollen Social Festival ’09 – held in Brisbane.

COMINGS AND GOINGS
The entrances and exits of the artist Andrew Newman

“I don’t know what you do with your days,” my father recently said to me.
“I go to my studio ,” I said.
“And what do you do there all day?” he asked begrudgingly.
“I make art.”
The conversation stopped there. My father didn’t really try to unravel my life any further. Art was a foreign concept to him. At every exhibition opening he would walk around the gallery exclaiming, “this is art?” I told my father I would document my days for him and start a blog so he could see that I was doing something.
I wasn’t too offended by my fathers inability to understand what I did each day. I never understood what he did each day. He was an accountant. He would go into the office, and then he would leave the office. The hours in-between were a mystery to me. Once as a child I spent a day in his office and I watched what he did. He had an inbox and an outbox. He would take pages from the inbox, look at them, change them, and then put them in his outbox. It seems to me now that an accountant isn’t too far removed from a conceptual artist.
This abstract of the daily grind that exists in most modern professions, where people are at pains to exactly explain what they do each day is the motivation for the blog titled ‘Comings and Goings’. The blog documented me at the door of my studio, entering at the beginning of the day and exiting at the end of the day. Each blog post included a photograph and a short text explanation listing what I had done before I entered and after I entered the space. Instead of clearly articulating what it was ‘I did’ the blog revealed an absurd, Beckett-like, state of existence that expressed the persistence of the passing of time.
The sociologist Manuel Castells wrote that ‘the process of work is at the core of social structure’. The idea of ‘work’, particularly during this current rise in unemployment, is a pertinent issue that needs to be addressed by artists. People’s very existence is shaped by work and their daily comings and goings. Yet artists, who have a vital social role to reveal the idiosyncrasies of the world, often overlook the nature of ‘work’.
An artist practises art. It is an experimental state, yet at the end of this practise, this dress rehearsal, the artist has an artwork. This is where the work begins.

[now, the building situation: the landlords have put in a security door at the front of the building (which is broken already!) we can only leave it open for so long, ’cause some residents actually wanted the fuckin’ thing…so: it will be open (wide open) from 7 til 9 and then closed but not locked for the rest of the night (unless someone locks it) if people can’t get in, there’s no point in buzzing the room – we won’t hear it. either message a friend or the easiest option is entering from the back – directly opposite the aurora hotel. there is a carport in the building with three yellow poles stopping it from being used (go figure). if you walk past/through the poles, into the port – directly on your right is an always open fire escape door. enter, climb the concrete, then wooden stairs to the first level and enter the first door on your right that isn’t an apartment. exit, turn right up a three stair rise and listen for the noise 100 feet down the hall/balcony. voila!]

Grouper, Pimmon & Seaworthy

In what should turn out to be one of the best live music nights of 2009, Preservation will present a show from US artist Grouper in Sydney on March 6.

The project for Portland, Oregon’s Liz Harris, Grouper has steadily built incredible international acclaim for her mesmerising music, culminating in reaching both Pitchfork and The Wire’s Top 50 albums for 2008 with her most recent full-length, “Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill”.

Often compared to classic 4AD dream-pop acts – especially the Cocteau Twins – the trance-like melodies and narcotic voice in a Grouper song swirl both prettily and mysteriously in their pastoral, psychedelic way. Otherworldly and blissful, this one-off, intimate show will be special.

Making that more so will be a rare performance from Sydney’s sublime electronic composer Pimmon, set to release his new, long-awaited album Smudge Another Yesterday in April, with Seaworthy also adding their own delicate beauty to the evening.

The night takes place Friday March 6 at Serial Space, 33 Wellington Street, Chippendale from 8pm. Entry is 12 dollars.

Martorell is a Melbourne based artist who’s work examines biological form and
its applications to the creation of sound based drawings and sculpture,
influenced by his work as a musician (Snawklor, The Hi God People).

Martorell’s process based methodology uses the gallery as a combination of
workshop and social meeting space where the gallery area is used as the basis
for a variety of improvised collaborations and performances.

Using the concept of transforming plant algorithms into musical scores, ‘Stolon
Tonals’ inhabits an imagined musical Diaspora where the rhythms and structures
of nature give form to a series of architectural models, sound works, costumes,
prints and drawings.

This is Dylan Martorell’s first solo show in Sydney.
He has previously shown internationally in both solo and group shows, in London
and New York.

*SNAP* is a new saxophone quartet, bringing together ideas from jazz and New
Music. New York émigré Phillip Johnston has joined with some of Sydney’s
best-loved saxophonists, Paul Cutlan, Sandy Evans and Nick Bowd, to begin
what they hope to be a long-lived chamber group championing new jazz and
classical saxophone quartet music. So far it features original compositions
by Sandy, Paul, and Phillip, as well as both Australian and American
composers from outside the group.

John Shand, in the *Sydney Morning Herald*, described their appearance at
the 2007 Jazz: Now Festival at the Sydney Opera House as, “*creating
sonorities from the Ellingtonian to the spiky*,” and music writer John Clare
called them “*full of early jazz quirkiness, impressionism and modernity*…”

Their combined C.V.s include work with the Australian Art Orchestra, The
catholics, Clarion Fracture Zone, MARA!, Guy Klucevsek, Gary Lucas, The
Microscopic Septet, James Morrison, Mike Nock, ROVA, Mikel Rouse,
Sousaphonics, Art Spiegelman, Lou Reed, 10 Part Invention, Gest8, & John
Zorn. Individually, they have toured Australia, Asia, Europe, the U.S., and
Outer Space.

— Bohemian Grove performances are 6:30pm doors for a 7pm start each Sunday (unless otherwise advised). The cover is $10 / donation.
