The Ian Jury – 13th October 2023

A complete genius or total wanker
There’s no in-between
A diamond geezer or a tosspot
If you know what I mean?

Of course, it was a waste
For those with good taste
Lost in old England’s dream
When the rhythm stick hit
Championing the Brit
Inspired by old sweet Gene
A London vicar
A treat or tricker
And occasionally obscene
With panties and boots
From Edwardian roots
Cloaked in a music hall theme

inspired by Will Burch’s Ian Dury biography

Today I’m feeling:

(1.30 am) I’m still awake again. I’m super tired but just can’t get to sleep.

(9 am) I reckon I got to sleep at around 3.30 after trying various different places around the house. It was so frustrating. My 8am alarm shook me awake and I did 100 star jumps to try and actually wake up. On the bus and in the city waiting to see Hayden.

(11.15 am) I’m starting to flag. Hayden’s flight was delayed an hour and I’m desperately trying to keep my eyes open.

Today I’m grateful for:

Ray Ahn at Utopia Records and Nic at Repressed Records for giving me information and updates on what’s happening around Sydney these days. I’m glad they still remembered me!

The best thing about today was:

Catching up with Hayden and his news and cruising around town in and out of various shops. Another day of more than ten thousand steps.

What was out of your control today and how did you handle it?

My brain was a little out of control there for a while as I got dizzy looking at all the books in Kinokunya.

Something I learned today?

Ray Ahn recommended three bands to me; fortuitously, one of them will play the show on Sunday.

What brings me the most fulfilment?

Teaching for sure. Since returning to Sydney for these few days I’m realising how much my life has changed since leaving Australia. My eyes opened to new ideas and pace of life. Whereas I may have found fulfilment with music before, organising and working with artists; that feels like a different life. That’s ok. It’s better not to just be stuck in one thing forever. I’ve worn many hats and maybe I’ll still have a chance to wear more.

Who has influenced my life in a profound way?

All the special women in my life. My mom, Emma, Cherry, Bronwyn, TLJ, Echo, Lorraine, Kyoko, Chise and Amy. Small parts and big, all these people I have loved and got me where I am right now, attending a wedding overlooking the beautiful waters of Sydney. It’s been an up-and-down journey that I’m proud to have travelled.  Let’s keep going. Now the special women in my life are my students who I hope I can inspire to realise their dreams.

Hayden took this picture because we haven’t seen each other for four years and we’re both happy and healthy these days.

Ears Have Ears, FBi Radio’s weekly experimental music program is launching a series of new live shows, which will bring together some of Australia’s most exciting musicians to perform in a range of unique venues across Sydney.

This show marks the first in the series with a dual-state lineup featuring primitive poppurveyors and hand-made ‘unstrument’ creators Sky Needle (QLD), featuring members of Kitchen’s Floor, Per Purpose, Unwar & OtherFilm.

Also on the lineup is Sydney’s Desert Luck, a duo made up of Anthony Guerra from the mesmerizing Love Chants / Black Petal label and Peter Blamey, who as a soloist primarily uses open electronics, previously performing at The NOW now, What Is Music? and Liquid

Architecture festivals.

Third on the lineup is Sydney’s Exotic Dog, the solo project of Nic Warnock (R.I.P. Society, Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys, Model Citizen). A new(ish) act, Exotic Dog uses four tracks and answering machine cassettes to create disorientating soundscapes.

Celebrate MCA ARTBAR driven by Audi first birthday this May as you experiment with the theme of weird science curated by Sydney artist Keg de Souza. From the 1985 teen sci-fi film classic by John Hughes to the literal meaning of weird science, Keg invites you to interpret the evening as you see fit. Create Kelly LeBrock out of a computer program, or ponder the vast meaning and strangeness of our modern scientific accomplishments.

Step inside an inflatable planetarium or take in some screenings from the infamous Mu Meson archives. Encounter Wade Marynowsky’s robots, Diego Bonetto’s test-tube gardens or Justice Yeldham’s unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass. For our very first birthday you can expect strange things to be happening in dark the corners of the MCA. Hypothesise on the sculpture terrace for one of the most magical views of Vivid in Sydney.

It’s art but not as you know it.

dirty shirlows, 32 shirlow st, marrickville
$10 entry with “Kullucinations” 3 inch / $8 without

16-year-old bedroom urchin Eugene Ward is probably better known through his instrumental hip hop outings as Mazzadius, which, at the tender age of 14, landed him on high rotation at Sydney radio station FBi, and launched beat-making enterprises with musicians as wide-reaching as Madvillain collaborator Stacey Epps.

Apparently bitter at the (musical) world he’d operated in previously, Eugene, under the new moniker Maitreya Kali, has come up with a contemporary bent on the kind of vinyl-based ambience that Touch and Kranky luminaries such as Philip Jeck and Keith Fullerton Whitman have made their names from. I’m hugely thrilled to have the opportunity to let the results of this, “Kullucinations”, onto the world, via 3 inch CD-R.

Also playing is the wonderful Cleptoclectics, the primary musical project of sound designer Tom Smith, whose contribution to Feral Media’s Powwow series revealed a juicy balance between pop sensibility and sampling genius. Clepto will have a 3 inch on HellosQuare later in the year.

FourPlay String Quartet cellist and host of Utility Fog on FBi Peter Hollo brings us some solo cello noises as Raven, whose appearances have been almost as sporadic as, and potentially of similar quality to Scott Walker’s output since the mid 80s. A 7 inch with American cellist Aaron Martin on sound&fury’s passeridae series will also arrive later in the year.

This event will be hosted by the wonderful Dirty Shirlows in Marrickville’s warehouse quarter.

the NOW now returns to the Blue Mountains with a very special performance. Not only are there amazing international performers, but it will be also powered by solar energy! Thanks to Eden Ottignon for the use of his solar generator.

Brisbane-based Daiji Igarashi plays a final performance before he leaves Australia to live in Shanghai.
Hewill also be joined be local Blue Mountainer Adam Sussman and post-local Blue Mountainer Rory Brown.

Jeff Henderson from New Zealand performs solo banjo/woodwind/etc. This should be stunning!

Daiji Igarashi was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1983. Since about 2001 he has actively developed music centered on free improvisation, and expanded the possibilities of the electric guitar by innovating various sound effects.
For 3 years together with Yusuke Akai and Joel Stern in Brisbane, Igarashi was the co-curator of Audiopoolen Social Club. APSC is an artist-oriented, freeform, sonic but sensorially promiscuous beast that bewtween 2006-2009 ran over eighty DIY happenings in a concrete storage shelter in West End, Brisbane. APSC had been hosted various international and interstates artists.
In March of 2009, Igarashi was the executive producer of the three days music festival, Ready Aim Fire – Audiopollen Social Festival ’09 – held in Brisbane.

COMINGS AND GOINGS
The entrances and exits of the artist Andrew Newman

“I don’t know what you do with your days,” my father recently said to me.
“I go to my studio ,” I said.
“And what do you do there all day?” he asked begrudgingly.
“I make art.”
The conversation stopped there. My father didn’t really try to unravel my life any further. Art was a foreign concept to him. At every exhibition opening he would walk around the gallery exclaiming, “this is art?” I told my father I would document my days for him and start a blog so he could see that I was doing something.
I wasn’t too offended by my fathers inability to understand what I did each day. I never understood what he did each day. He was an accountant. He would go into the office, and then he would leave the office. The hours in-between were a mystery to me. Once as a child I spent a day in his office and I watched what he did. He had an inbox and an outbox. He would take pages from the inbox, look at them, change them, and then put them in his outbox. It seems to me now that an accountant isn’t too far removed from a conceptual artist.
This abstract of the daily grind that exists in most modern professions, where people are at pains to exactly explain what they do each day is the motivation for the blog titled ‘Comings and Goings’. The blog documented me at the door of my studio, entering at the beginning of the day and exiting at the end of the day. Each blog post included a photograph and a short text explanation listing what I had done before I entered and after I entered the space. Instead of clearly articulating what it was ‘I did’ the blog revealed an absurd, Beckett-like, state of existence that expressed the persistence of the passing of time.
The sociologist Manuel Castells wrote that ‘the process of work is at the core of social structure’. The idea of ‘work’, particularly during this current rise in unemployment, is a pertinent issue that needs to be addressed by artists. People’s very existence is shaped by work and their daily comings and goings. Yet artists, who have a vital social role to reveal the idiosyncrasies of the world, often overlook the nature of ‘work’.
An artist practises art. It is an experimental state, yet at the end of this practise, this dress rehearsal, the artist has an artwork. This is where the work begins.

[now, the building situation: the landlords have put in a security door at the front of the building (which is broken already!) we can only leave it open for so long, ’cause some residents actually wanted the fuckin’ thing…so: it will be open (wide open) from 7 til 9 and then closed but not locked for the rest of the night (unless someone locks it) if people can’t get in, there’s no point in buzzing the room – we won’t hear it. either message a friend or the easiest option is entering from the back – directly opposite the aurora hotel. there is a carport in the building with three yellow poles stopping it from being used (go figure). if you walk past/through the poles, into the port – directly on your right is an always open fire escape door. enter, climb the concrete, then wooden stairs to the first level and enter the first door on your right that isn’t an apartment. exit, turn right up a three stair rise and listen for the noise 100 feet down the hall/balcony. voila!]

“I think sculpture is a more primitive form of art than painting… there’s something essentially infantile about the sculptural relation to matter. It has to do with the infant differentiating itself from the world.. of course, that’s a disaster, because the infant wants to think of itself as continuous with the universe – the infantile omnipotence. It’s a disaster when one realises one is discontinuous. There is the self, and all that is not the self. And sculpture has something to do with that fundamental feeling.”

– Carl Andre 1972

Obliteration explores the physical and emotional continuum created through loss of self. The works exhibited are situated between self and non-self, dissolving boundaries between artist, audience and curator.

Some works utilise interactivity as a tool to activate and complete the works, while others express an awareness of interaction through deliberate non-performance. These interactions reflect the psychologically regressive potential of self-obliteration, expressed in a way that explores base human relationships rather than intellectual analysis. Inherent to the physically human element of the show, is a strong sense of spatiality underlying the curation of each work.

The exhibition includes a number of artists who have no formal training, or that have previously never exhibited. The show looks at the artist’s personal expression of the self and the non-self as it exists both interior and exterior to the art field.

rev 777 – also known as rank sinatra and dj rainbow ejactulation , a veritable plethora of alias as long as your arm and proud owner of goulborn poultry fanciers society label. Be prepared to expect the unexpectedly expected.

Eiterherd is an Austrian breakcore artist. He first got into experimental music in 1994, when he started DJ’ing hardcore and gabber around Graz, Austria and Maribor, Slovenia. In 1995 he started making music on a computer, using various trackers. In 1996 he together with Gwal he founded the record label Widerstand Records. The goal of Widerstand, besides just releasing music, is doing record business in a non-profit orientated way and using the platform for delivering political messages. In March 1997 Silent Revolution Records was founded as a sublabel of Widerstand records and later two more sublabels followed: reek.org and pornoir.com.
The first release on the label came out in October 1996: a limited split 12″ featuring Gwal and Eiterherd. In early 1997 Eiterherd and Gwal both released solo 12″ EPs. In 1999 Eiterherd released his first full-length album as a co- production between Praxis Records and Widerstand Records. The album used samples from the film 1984 and was titled 1984 vs. 1999.
In 1998 Gwal and Eiterherd split up and Gwal founded his own label Dusk Records. Eiterherd continues to manage Widerstand Records and is also responsible for the maintenance and design of Widerstand website online from late 1997 until 2006.

Dirty Shirlows, 32 Shirlow St, Marrickville
7pm $5

This Thursday- from 7pm we’re bringing together niche schlock horror with rare performances from the damn original JRocker (Manifestival) and The Vultures (in some sort of configuration).

WEEK 1:ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST

Zombie Holocaust, directed by Marino Girolami is an Italian horror disaster classic complete with a holey plot, verging on the rediculous. It was made during the Italiano horror craze of the 1970’s / 80’s and features a bunch of B-Grade actors that you’ve never heard of.

The plot deals with that age old question ” Hmmm.. I wonder what would happen if Zombies and flesh-eating cannibals came together for an all-out face biting, skin gnawing fight fest?”.

It’s worth a watch- believe me.

the Creeks, and Jackson/Leipnitz Duo

Creeks is a trio of former UWS students formed in 2008.

When not getting drunk and eating cheese we make some music together which involves Monika Brooks playing Piano (when one is available), Jon Hunter on Guitar and Kusum Normoyle singing in and around her computer. We also made
some recordings into Jons New Laptop, but then Kusum spilt wine on it, but it was ok (One of the shift keys does not work but luckily it has two). We are an improvising band.

The  Jackson / Leipnitz Duo is an intercontinental collaboration of alto saxophonist Dave Jackson (Syd) and drummer Jan Leipnitz (Berlin). The duo improvises freely with an emphasis on melody and groove. Fans of the famous
Charles Lloyd/Billy Higgins duo recordings will love these guys.

— Bohemian Grove performances are 6:30pm doors for a 7pm start each Sunday (unless otherwise advised). The cover is $10 / donation. Please feel free to invite your friends to come and/or join the mailing list, but we ask that nothing be posted on the web for the authorities to find (they are squares).
