Marty Wieczorek Quintet

After gaining his ATCL (Associate of Trinity College London) with distinction in 2002 for classical clarinet performance,
Marty was successful in all his auditions for tertiary music study at the Perth, Canberra, Brisbane and Sydney Conservatoriums of music, in both the classical and jazz genres. Opting to study jazz at WAAPA in early 2004(the
Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts), Marty took a year off in mid-2004 to pursue private practice in Sydney. During this time he was awarded the Ewa Malewicz Scholarship for classical clarinet performance. Shortly
after his return to Perth, Marty was awarded the Brett Lockyer Scholarship for jazz clarinet performance in 2005. From 2006-07 Marty was a member of the WAYJO (Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra) as an alto saxophonist and
clarinetist, which afforded him many exciting performance opportunities. After successfully completing his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance in late 2007, Marty moved back to Sydney, where he is currently spending his time
teaching and performing.

$10 entry with “Kullucinations” 3 inch / $8 without

16-year-old bedroom urchin Eugene Ward is probably better known through his instrumental hip hop outings as Mazzadius, which, at the tender age of 14, landed him on high rotation at Sydney radio station FBi, and launched beat-making enterprises with musicians as wide-reaching as Madvillain collaborator Stacey Epps.

Apparently bitter at the (musical) world he’d operated in previously, Eugene, under the new moniker Maitreya Kali, has come up with a contemporary bent on the kind of vinyl-based ambience that Touch and Kranky luminaries such as Philip Jeck and Keith Fullerton Whitman have made their names from. I’m hugely thrilled to have the opportunity to let the results of this, “Kullucinations”, onto the world, via 3 inch CD-R.

Also playing is the wonderful Cleptoclectics, the primary musical project of sound designer Tom Smith, whose contribution to Feral Media’s Powwow series revealed a juicy balance between pop sensibility and sampling genius. Clepto will have a 3 inch on HellosQuare later in the year.

FourPlay String Quartet cellist and host of Utility Fog on FBi Peter Hollo brings us some solo cello noises as Raven, whose appearances have been almost as sporadic as, and potentially of similar quality to Scott Walker’s output since the mid 80s. A 7 inch with American cellist Aaron Martin on sound&fury’s passeridae series will also arrive later in the year.

This event will be hosted by the wonderful Dirty Shirlows in Marrickville’s warehouse quarter.

For 3 years together with Yusuke Akai and Joel Stern in Brisbane, Igarashi was the co-curator of Audiopoolen Social Club. APSC is an artist-oriented, freeform, sonic but sensorially promiscuous beast that bewtween 2006-2009 ran over eighty DIY happenings in a concrete storage shelter in West End, Brisbane. APSC had been hosted various international and interstates artists.
In March of 2009, Igarashi was the executive producer of the three days music festival, Ready Aim Fire – Audiopollen Social Festival ’09 – held in Brisbane.

call-out:

‘FOREVER THE MOTION’
An Audio Visual Collaborative Collision
Featuring Robyn Wilson, Jack Dibben, Anthony Garvin, Jordana Maisie, Kirin J Callinan & Morning Stalker

Sunday 17 May 2009

Black & Blue Gallery
302/267 – 271 Cleveland Street, Redfern

View of Courage is proud to present ‘Forever the Motion’, an audio visual collaborative performance featuring a unique cluster of highly progressive Sydney-based artists and musicians – Robyn Wilson, Jack Dibben, Anthony Garvin, Jordana Maisie, Kirin J Callinan and Morning Stalker. Incorporating original compositions in music and sound design, video art, costume and movement, just 100 tickets will be released for the event, one that is set to be a cataclysm of intense visual beauty and aural splendor.

Each individual creative holds a solid grounding in the Sydney art and music milieux, with a diversity of backgrounds that lay rich the context from which the forms and messages of the evening will transpire.

The key performance ‘Forever the Motion’ will feature Robyn Wilson (vox, costume, movement), a multi-disciplinary artist and musician who grounds the conceptual basis of the headline performance, as her personal journey shapes it. This project embodying the next evolution in her ongoing fascination with the marriage of audio and visual practices into one momentous, multi-dimensional experience.

The original score also features the composition and performance of musician Jack Dibben (guitar, live fx), whose superb experimental approach invests heavily in a unique, improvisational sound aesthetic. Plus the remarkable Anthony Garvin (live fx, sound design), whose production expertise brings a transformative ability to process and shape sound as it is created.

The video element of the key performance will feature the new media and electronic artist Jordana Maisie, whose interactive approach, exemplified throughout her video and sound works, will underpin a temporal association between the aural, visual and physical realms.

The nature of the piece has a basis in continuity and cyclical progression and the correlation between expressive media and artistic interpretation.

Across five immediately consecutive movements, the performance elaborates experiential abstractions of the process of self, in action and progression. It attempts to explore the inherent balance of impetuosity and inevitability in our decisions and the ways in which they ramify. Highly personal in its motivations, ‘Forever the Motion’ extrapolates the subjective mapping of an emotional experience in terms of transferable universals: black and white, sound and silence, light and dark, perfection and defacement, stasis and motion, shattering and coalescence. These pairs are not binaries but continuums along which the five movements flow gesturally and conceptually.

The blurring of roles, boundaries, media and authorship, that underlie the examination of process and progress enacted imbue ‘Forever the Motion’ with a vitality and originality that places this special collaboration in an interesting position in the Sydney art scene.

Also featuring on the night, as an epic solo act, will be the strikingly distinguished, increasingly prominent Kirin J Callinan, a captivating musician-performer, of eminent Sydney band Mercy Arms and the explosive incidentalists Fashion Launches Rocket Launches. Beautiful, stirring, undeniable – Kirin is a vital figure in the current Sydney creative landscape. His approach to his shows “offer me a gig, I’ll give you a performance” speaks for itself.

Plus experimental, ambient soundscape 3-piece Morning Stalker made up of Morgan McKellar (guitar, live fx, vocals), Simon Oh (bass sax) and Marc Chomiki (drums) will lay forth the first layer of aural carpet throughout the unique and splendorous space of Black & Blue Gallery.

There will be a live sound and video recording captured on the night, to then be produced as an independent audio visual piece due for release late-August 2009. It is with great pleasure for View of Courage to announce that the sound recording will be mixed and mastered at Studios 301, Australia’s most prestigious recording studios.

COMINGS AND GOINGS
The entrances and exits of the artist Andrew Newman

“I don’t know what you do with your days,” my father recently said to me.
“I go to my studio ,” I said.
“And what do you do there all day?” he asked begrudgingly.
“I make art.”
The conversation stopped there. My father didn’t really try to unravel my life any further. Art was a foreign concept to him. At every exhibition opening he would walk around the gallery exclaiming, “this is art?” I told my father I would document my days for him and start a blog so he could see that I was doing something.
I wasn’t too offended by my fathers inability to understand what I did each day. I never understood what he did each day. He was an accountant. He would go into the office, and then he would leave the office. The hours in-between were a mystery to me. Once as a child I spent a day in his office and I watched what he did. He had an inbox and an outbox. He would take pages from the inbox, look at them, change them, and then put them in his outbox. It seems to me now that an accountant isn’t too far removed from a conceptual artist.
This abstract of the daily grind that exists in most modern professions, where people are at pains to exactly explain what they do each day is the motivation for the blog titled ‘Comings and Goings’. The blog documented me at the door of my studio, entering at the beginning of the day and exiting at the end of the day. Each blog post included a photograph and a short text explanation listing what I had done before I entered and after I entered the space. Instead of clearly articulating what it was ‘I did’ the blog revealed an absurd, Beckett-like, state of existence that expressed the persistence of the passing of time.
The sociologist Manuel Castells wrote that ‘the process of work is at the core of social structure’. The idea of ‘work’, particularly during this current rise in unemployment, is a pertinent issue that needs to be addressed by artists. People’s very existence is shaped by work and their daily comings and goings. Yet artists, who have a vital social role to reveal the idiosyncrasies of the world, often overlook the nature of ‘work’.
An artist practises art. It is an experimental state, yet at the end of this practise, this dress rehearsal, the artist has an artwork. This is where the work begins.

please contact spanish***@hotmail.com for details on the place if ya haven’t visited one of the where?house’s before. we have a couple of hurdles for the next gig – please read below…i will only post it once, then delete this thread soon. sign up for the mailing list at the gig or email the above. thanks.

[now, the building situation: the landlords have put in a security door at the front of the building (which is broken already!) we can only leave it open for so long, ’cause some residents actually wanted the fuckin’ thing…so: it will be open (wide open) from 7 til 9 and then closed but not locked for the rest of the night (unless someone locks it) if people can’t get in, there’s no point in buzzing the room – we won’t hear it. either message a friend or the easiest option is entering from the back – directly opposite the aurora hotel. there is a carport in the building with three yellow poles stopping it from being used (go figure). if you walk past/through the poles, into the port – directly on your right is an always open fire escape door. enter, climb the concrete, then wooden stairs to the first level and enter the first door on your right that isn’t an apartment. exit, turn right up a three stair rise and listen for the noise 100 feet down the hall/balcony. voila!]

Martorell is a Melbourne based artist who’s work examines biological form and
its applications to the creation of sound based drawings and sculpture,
influenced by his work as a musician (Snawklor, The Hi God People).

Martorell’s process based methodology uses the gallery as a combination of
workshop and social meeting space where the gallery area is used as the basis
for a variety of improvised collaborations and performances.

Using the concept of transforming plant algorithms into musical scores, ‘Stolon
Tonals’ inhabits an imagined musical Diaspora where the rhythms and structures
of nature give form to a series of architectural models, sound works, costumes,
prints and drawings.

This is Dylan Martorell’s first solo show in Sydney.
He has previously shown internationally in both solo and group shows, in London
and New York.

*SNAP* is a new saxophone quartet, bringing together ideas from jazz and New
Music. New York émigré Phillip Johnston has joined with some of Sydney’s
best-loved saxophonists, Paul Cutlan, Sandy Evans and Nick Bowd, to begin
what they hope to be a long-lived chamber group championing new jazz and
classical saxophone quartet music. So far it features original compositions
by Sandy, Paul, and Phillip, as well as both Australian and American
composers from outside the group.

John Shand, in the *Sydney Morning Herald*, described their appearance at
the 2007 Jazz: Now Festival at the Sydney Opera House as, “*creating
sonorities from the Ellingtonian to the spiky*,” and music writer John Clare
called them “*full of early jazz quirkiness, impressionism and modernity*…”

Their combined C.V.s include work with the Australian Art Orchestra, The
catholics, Clarion Fracture Zone, MARA!, Guy Klucevsek, Gary Lucas, The
Microscopic Septet, James Morrison, Mike Nock, ROVA, Mikel Rouse,
Sousaphonics, Art Spiegelman, Lou Reed, 10 Part Invention, Gest8, & John
Zorn. Individually, they have toured Australia, Asia, Europe, the U.S., and
Outer Space.

fag panic, kill a celebrity, squat club, anklepants

this show pretty much embodies the idea behind the club – 4 very different bands brought together for one night of ‘zentertainment’!

**ANKLEPANTS: the bad doctor lives life as a cuntdick with a faceprick. A one man dance band sort of thing spinning twisted danceable rhythms and beats. Dr Richard Facemaker has a face that can be programed to perform an exciting fruit bowl of dazzling movement. Badfacehead pndpndpndpnd.

http://www.myspace.com/anklepantsqwerty

**SQUAT CLUB: as a 4 piece consisting of a drummer, bassist, piccolo bassist and eukekele/guitarist, Squat Club are one of the most unique, talented and exciting bands to emerge out of Sydney in recent memory. Their style is akin to the amalamation of Eastern/Secret Chiefs 3 influenced polyrhythmic structures with early King Crimson, Pink Floyd and other assorted 60s and 70s psychedelic/progressive groups and a slight post-rock influence.

Squat Club combine brilliant progressions with mind-twisting rhythm changes and a beautiful jazz-tinged dynamic drumming feel akin to Jon Theodore’s work in Golden and The Mars Volta. If you’re a fan of Secret Chiefs 3, King Crimson or a range of avant-garde, post-rock or progressive genres, then this is something you wont want o miss. Squat Club are only expected to play a handful more shows before they disband.

http://www.myspace.com/squatclub

**KILL A CELEBRITY: the words that come to mind in describing Kill A Celebrity are caustic and agonizing. Somewhat renown and reviled within various Sydney scenes, Kill A Celebrity are a Sydney-based three piece playing inconceivably fast grindcore influenced by groups such as Discordance Axis, Agents of Abhorrence and Pig Destroyer. Expect a lively stage presence which has caused infamy at less spirited venues, coupled with raw, violent and wholly uncompromising music stripped of all pretentions.

http://www.myspace.com/killacelebritygrind

**FAG PANIC: All-singing all dancing tough arse ponies with hearts of gold. Electro-glam-tronic with the force of a tiger going into battle. We’ll accept payment in cake form or Steven Seagal’s Lightning Bolt Energy Drinks (preferably Asian Experience flavour). Please let us play for you.

BUM CREEK _ well, i (have) got nothing. they’re website is weird, at least one of them has a large beard, and they’ve been described as ‘tribal’. fuckin’ hippies? fuck no. fuckin’ rad! just come along and see/hear the enigma that is Bum Creek…i can’t articulate why, i hate fuckin’ keyboards.

CASTINGS _ yeah, again – what’s the point? though let me establish a few things. we’re not rich. we’re not hippies. sex and death imagery is boring, and no, we did not start a fight at TINA. next…

PREHISTORIC FUCKIN’ MORON _ also known as Jimmy James And The White Cranes (new CDR ‘The Stud’ out now on Spanish Magic…$5 at the show), the aforementioned moron is arguably sydney’s best and worst kept secret. a complete mess (a composed though absolutely unpredictable mess) of broken tape machines, broken turntables, a broken clarinet…are you seeing a pattern? if you’re lucky, he’ll sell you a tape (there’ll only be five of ’em but THAT CASSETTE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE), drink your booze, smoke your weed…then perform. acid.

CHROME DOME _ a new band featuring mr. shaun south. fucked up 80’s synths banged into melodic submission ala The Normal, Dark Day and Primitive Calculators (yeah…i know, but this shit’s for real ya know?) rad.

please message one of the bands or me for the show’s location.

New archetypes – FRIENDS since birth, Screamin’ E. Hernia and Karl Richard-Marx formed New Archetypes in 2006 when it became apparent that Karl’s musical skills combined with fledgling guitarist, filmmaker and gutter poet Hernia’s songs formed the perfect recipe for a brutal new archetype. In a rehearsal room in their death-metal friend Billy’s warehouse flat above a smash repair joint in Redfern, they hammered away at their craft, throwing in covers by The Stooges, The Beasts of Bourbon and The Birthday Party, Karl accompanying variously on guitar, bass and a horrific optical theremin shaped like a baby doll’s head with red glowing eyes, which he ran through all manner of effects to synthesise the rotting belch of the devil. Hernia’s raspy screaming and shouting was terrifying. One evening, during a particularly bone-powdering jam, they earnt their first $5, when a tripping metal head who hung out at the flat stuck the money under the door, with a note pleading with them to stop making him feel like he was dying. Skip forward a few months, and Karl is at a party getting hammered. His brother Hans Regretel and friend The Naked Drewth mention they want to form a band, Hans being a bassist/guitarist, Drew being an aspiring drummer (in that he couldn’t play, but liked the idea). Karl and Hernia decided this mix of experience and inexperience (or innocence?) had an attractive Blakean undertone. Besides, this way there’d be more people to chip in for bourbon. Soon after, New Archetypes rehearsed together for the first time, The Naked Drewth having his first ever bash at a kit. With them was friend Ted Frostbite, an eccentric punk and pipe organ virtuoso, who’d performed recitals in places like the Sydney Town Hall and the Opera House. His father was also a keyboard player for Suzi Quattro, as well as The Who’s John Entwistle, Kiki Dee and Robert Palmer’s early-’70s group Vinegar Joe. Despite Ted’s extreme abilities in the art of fine music, he aimed for total chaos. The formula had been written. New Archetypes were complete. The first public New Archetypes gig took place January 5, 2007, at the Lansdowne Hotel and was cut short after just two songs because Screamin’ E. Hernia had already been in a fight with a bouncer and got kicked out. The band had to sneak him back in to play. They were compensated by the venue with unlimited free beer. Things just haven’t been the same since. Prepare yourself for NA. It will be loud. It will be brutal. It will be primitive. You will be addicted. NA beckons.

Maxwell stone – Formed 2005 in Enmore, Sydney. Maxwell Stone is described as Stoner Rock with metal inclinations. Members include Peter ”P.P.R.” Richards (Guitar/Drums)27,Albury ”Benny” West (Drums)24, Sam ”Rush” McNair (Vocals/Guitar)26 & brother Tom ”AKA1-Madman” (Lead Guitar)27. Maxwell Stone is the product of the now infamous ”Cakehole”. The Cakehole is a shoptop flat above a cake shop (though the cake shop no longer remains). Tom,Sam & friend since primary school Pete began jamming on an old borrowed amp inthe lounge room. It grew from there to playing at parties and soon enough in November 2005 the group played their first gig, Bar Broadway in Sydney. In 2007 Maxwell Stone recruited ex-Leprechaun Deathstar drummer Albury West. Maxwell Stone’s music was used in the soundtrack of ”Cheerleader Swap Meat” also playing at the Film launch in August 07. The group plays regular local shows and draws a dedicated fanbase. In 2008 Maxwell Stone has recorded a self titled E.P and plans to release in November. A tour of the Eastern States of Australia is planned for late 2008.

Conor O’Brien

There Stands The Glass

Opening 30th October

31st October – 16th November 2008

Conor O’Brien was recently referred to as one of the country’s ‘best, most interesting and certainly most promising’ young photographers by the Associate Curator of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Dr Robert Cook.  In October and November 2008, Black & Blue Gallery will host O’Brien’s most recent body of work, There Stands The Glass.

First shown at the Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) in Melbourne earlier this year, There Stands The Glass is a collection of colour photographs; portraits, landscapes and observations that are calm and considered, never poking fun at their subjects but always celebrating their beauty. The images were captured over two years and deal with people and the sense of people.  The subjects are almost always friends, family and the places that hold their spirit.

The Age reviewer Penelope Modra wrote of There Stands The Glass, “[O’Brien]’s not asking you to look through his eyes as thought they are your own and share some modernist‘epiphany moment’. It’s just an invitation to feel, well, what you feel.”

O’Brien has shown work at the Australian Centre for Photography, the Centre for Contemporary Photography, The National Portrait Gallery, The Art Gallery of

Western Australia, the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, Utopian Slumps Gallery and was included in the New York Photography Festival 2008.  He currently lives and works in Sydney.

this is Deja Vu’s 4th birthday, and some guy named Aiden’s Halloween party.

this is from the flyer – “open jams & food from 5pm” – i guess jam is more of a spread than a food ey. ha ha ha. blegh. it goes till like 4 am or something.

ANYWAY bands/people/dj’s featured on this night are:

Fuji Collective, Toecutter, Day of the Meerkat, Svelt, Squid, Captains, Baram, Brackets

all for a gold coin donation. fuckin deal!

Fantastic Doug and the Cupcake Club – is a (“totally fab!”) musical pop group created in the basement Studio of the Youth Center.
— “Wow, the Cupcake Club? Yeah man they’re totally ‘off the hook’!”
— “You like the Cupcakes??! How ‘INDY’ and ‘DIFFERENT’!”
— “Woooooah dudes I was at the Cupcake Club show on Friday and they were so tight I got a hemmorhoid! And my face melted off!!!! True story”
See what I mean….?

The Warm Feelings – wizards , magic and dreams fortold by a mystical sage to dominate rock ‘ n ‘roll for one night only. Come witness the power drums and guitar can channel from dancing on the dead bones of bon scott and kurt cocaine.

The Mistakes – These guys really haven’t the faintest idea how be a successful rock and roll outfit. It’s been one drama after another over the last (god is it almost) five years. Including on stage implosions, due to excessive levels of intoxication, break ups due to unbearable levels of homo-erotic tension in the band room, a pure inability to sing correctly or even play their instruments, it has been an uphill battle for these guys. Their continuing existence is testimony to their high self-appreciation of their own particular brand of half-cocked, shambolic-punk, post-rock, almost-art, pop-n-roll, hard-wank, mess. That said one almost gets the feeling that one day, somewhere, someone may flip a coin and BAM! The Mistakes may become a credible band. But probably not

Bohemian Grove (L2/68 Sophia St, Surry Hills) is tickled pink to present…

the Carl Dewhurst Trio!
Carl Dewhurst – guitar
Cameron Undy – bass
Evan Mannell – drums

Carl’s trio explore the fine lines of improvising in and out of time/tune/taste. Fortune favours the wrong. Yin/Yang says at it’s worst it’s best, at it’s best it’s bad. And we all know bad is good.

*” In this age of convergent politics and convergent art it’s refreshing to know anarchy still has a champion, and his name is Carl Dewhurst. …he is such a pure, intuitive improviser… Like a liquid, Dewhurst fills any context, but never blandly so. “*
