SCUL HAZZARDs – Landlord – 1st February 2010

Cat #: 034TZM

Around 2 years ago SCUL HAZZARDs made the big leap from Brisbane to London, playing over 100 shows, releasing 2 vinyl full length albums, working dead end jobs and generally impressing everyone that came across them. Now, finally, they’re back, straight into a tour in February ending up located in Melbourne. To coincide with the tour tenzenmen will release SCUL HAZZARDs second LP ‘Landlord’ for the first time on CD. For those fans seeking the first LP ‘Let Them Sink’, these tracks will also become available via the iTunes Store.

First quote on their return came from drummer Leigh Fischer simply stating ‘It’s fucking hot here’. Elaborating further the band have decided to return home simply to earn more money to take themselves back out on the road and return for more overseas jaunts and reminding Australian fans that they are still alive and kicking as much as ever. With two albums worth of mostly unheard (on these shores) material to draw from, their shows are sure to be incendiary and the ‘Landlord’ CD captures their dynamic noise rock sound perfectly. Think Jesus Lizard heaviness mixed with Shellac lightness all with an Aussie twist thrown in. They play hard – so listen loud.

“SCUL HAZZARDs have done nothing but show that they have the visceral edge to keep it fresh and inspiring in the present day…. for anyone that enjoys their rock with a bit of complexity and razor sharp squall…” states one reviewer of ‘Landlord’ but don’t just take their word for it, come and see it for real! Steven, Leigh and Tiffany are ready to rock your socks off. Tiffany commands the stage with real rock ‘n’ roll swagger literally trying to kill you with her presence and bass depth, whilst Steven, more demure in comparison, screams his vitriol and jags his guitar off to the side. Pay close attention to drummer Leigh and you’ll hear this is no ordinary dutiful rhythm section – it’s as if the bassist and drummer have switched instruments but are still playing them the same way.

Enjoy yourself, this is the new age – 4th August 1994

Since then things have been quiet, relative to the last two weeks, only incident’s being getting our deposits back off Tony Newton only for him to phone up accusing us of stealing the TV from the house. John was under the impression it didn’t belong to the house so we sold it for a fiver! Luckily I could get it back so I dropped it over only to find Tony back on the phone saying that’s not the right TV! I’m just laughing at it all now – it’s into joke territory!

Besides that, work took a turn yesterday as I was literally accused of stealing money from the till! Not by my boss but by his. My boss Sid trusts me ok but I was pretty damn pissed off so I’ve told him I’m not going to have any involvement with cash whatsoever, which really restricts the work that I can do. If he doesn’t like it, he can lump it. What a shitty thing to get said with only three weeks left there.

As you can imagine I’m not pushing myself at all anymore and with my wrist I may even have to stop writing again which means I’ll be able to do even less work. I’m looking forward to not working for a while that’s for sure. Rest and relaxation I’m not too accustomed to but heck, I’ll try anything.

There will always be someone bigger than you – 7th July 1994

Now is later and last night went okay in the fact then I managed to relax a bit. Unfortunately Broni had lots of work to do which kept her going till late.

John-boy’s bought himself a motorbike and hadn’t told Sarah he had it, so last night she came round and John crept outside while she was in the kitchen to go and start the bike (and show off his prize new possession (or penis extension as I called it!)). Unfortunately it wouldn’t start and took about 40 goes to kick it over. With each kick his ego shrinking! John bounces right back and is embarrassed about nothing really.

Tony Newton, the landlords agent, came round tonight to talk to Julie. Apparently he got the tears and everything. He also got her video player as a deposit against money she owes. Ha! She’s not a very happy girl and though we do feel sorry for her we would like her to be somebody else’s problem, and she’s the only one who can do anything for her.

Had a chat with Michelle tonight too and she’s pretty sound. Very straightforward and, I like this word for someone, nice! Also had time to sneak in some ballgames up at the park, with a mad dog running around, slippery tongue a-dangling, on speed or something.

Broni and I eventually, together, slept like babies wrapped in each other and woke this morning light beaming in the windows of our hearts. And I wish I could sit and write more and talk in depth about emotions and feelings but time is not here on my side just now (I do still work eight hours a day!).

One day I want to write about every single person I know – a brief summary of what they meant to me. One day, along with all the other things.
