$10 entry with “Kullucinations” 3 inch / $8 without

16-year-old bedroom urchin Eugene Ward is probably better known through his instrumental hip hop outings as Mazzadius, which, at the tender age of 14, landed him on high rotation at Sydney radio station FBi, and launched beat-making enterprises with musicians as wide-reaching as Madvillain collaborator Stacey Epps.

Apparently bitter at the (musical) world he’d operated in previously, Eugene, under the new moniker Maitreya Kali, has come up with a contemporary bent on the kind of vinyl-based ambience that Touch and Kranky luminaries such as Philip Jeck and Keith Fullerton Whitman have made their names from. I’m hugely thrilled to have the opportunity to let the results of this, “Kullucinations”, onto the world, via 3 inch CD-R.

Also playing is the wonderful Cleptoclectics, the primary musical project of sound designer Tom Smith, whose contribution to Feral Media’s Powwow series revealed a juicy balance between pop sensibility and sampling genius. Clepto will have a 3 inch on HellosQuare later in the year.

FourPlay String Quartet cellist and host of Utility Fog on FBi Peter Hollo brings us some solo cello noises as Raven, whose appearances have been almost as sporadic as, and potentially of similar quality to Scott Walker’s output since the mid 80s. A 7 inch with American cellist Aaron Martin on sound&fury’s passeridae series will also arrive later in the year.

This event will be hosted by the wonderful Dirty Shirlows in Marrickville’s warehouse quarter.

the NOW now at Kings Cave, Linden
starts 1pm
cost: donation

the NOW now returns to the Blue Mountains with a very special performance. Not only are there amazing international performers, but it will be also powered by solar energy! Thanks to Eden Ottignon for the use of his solar generator.

Brisbane-based Daiji Igarashi plays a final performance before he leaves Australia to live in Shanghai.
Hewill also be joined be local Blue Mountainer Adam Sussman and post-local Blue Mountainer Rory Brown.

Jeff Henderson from New Zealand performs solo banjo/woodwind/etc. This should be stunning!

Daiji Igarashi was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1983. Since about 2001 he has actively developed music centered on free improvisation, and expanded the possibilities of the electric guitar by innovating various sound effects.
For 3 years together with Yusuke Akai and Joel Stern in Brisbane, Igarashi was the co-curator of Audiopoolen Social Club. APSC is an artist-oriented, freeform, sonic but sensorially promiscuous beast that bewtween 2006-2009 ran over eighty DIY happenings in a concrete storage shelter in West End, Brisbane. APSC had been hosted various international and interstates artists.
In March of 2009, Igarashi was the executive producer of the three days music festival, Ready Aim Fire – Audiopollen Social Festival ’09 – held in Brisbane.

COMINGS AND GOINGS
The entrances and exits of the artist Andrew Newman

“I don’t know what you do with your days,” my father recently said to me.
“I go to my studio ,” I said.
“And what do you do there all day?” he asked begrudgingly.
“I make art.”
The conversation stopped there. My father didn’t really try to unravel my life any further. Art was a foreign concept to him. At every exhibition opening he would walk around the gallery exclaiming, “this is art?” I told my father I would document my days for him and start a blog so he could see that I was doing something.
I wasn’t too offended by my fathers inability to understand what I did each day. I never understood what he did each day. He was an accountant. He would go into the office, and then he would leave the office. The hours in-between were a mystery to me. Once as a child I spent a day in his office and I watched what he did. He had an inbox and an outbox. He would take pages from the inbox, look at them, change them, and then put them in his outbox. It seems to me now that an accountant isn’t too far removed from a conceptual artist.
This abstract of the daily grind that exists in most modern professions, where people are at pains to exactly explain what they do each day is the motivation for the blog titled ‘Comings and Goings’. The blog documented me at the door of my studio, entering at the beginning of the day and exiting at the end of the day. Each blog post included a photograph and a short text explanation listing what I had done before I entered and after I entered the space. Instead of clearly articulating what it was ‘I did’ the blog revealed an absurd, Beckett-like, state of existence that expressed the persistence of the passing of time.
The sociologist Manuel Castells wrote that ‘the process of work is at the core of social structure’. The idea of ‘work’, particularly during this current rise in unemployment, is a pertinent issue that needs to be addressed by artists. People’s very existence is shaped by work and their daily comings and goings. Yet artists, who have a vital social role to reveal the idiosyncrasies of the world, often overlook the nature of ‘work’.
An artist practises art. It is an experimental state, yet at the end of this practise, this dress rehearsal, the artist has an artwork. This is where the work begins.

[now, the building situation: the landlords have put in a security door at the front of the building (which is broken already!) we can only leave it open for so long, ’cause some residents actually wanted the fuckin’ thing…so: it will be open (wide open) from 7 til 9 and then closed but not locked for the rest of the night (unless someone locks it) if people can’t get in, there’s no point in buzzing the room – we won’t hear it. either message a friend or the easiest option is entering from the back – directly opposite the aurora hotel. there is a carport in the building with three yellow poles stopping it from being used (go figure). if you walk past/through the poles, into the port – directly on your right is an always open fire escape door. enter, climb the concrete, then wooden stairs to the first level and enter the first door on your right that isn’t an apartment. exit, turn right up a three stair rise and listen for the noise 100 feet down the hall/balcony. voila!]

Grouper, Pimmon & Seaworthy

In what should turn out to be one of the best live music nights of 2009, Preservation will present a show from US artist Grouper in Sydney on March 6.

The project for Portland, Oregon’s Liz Harris, Grouper has steadily built incredible international acclaim for her mesmerising music, culminating in reaching both Pitchfork and The Wire’s Top 50 albums for 2008 with her most recent full-length, “Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill”.

Often compared to classic 4AD dream-pop acts – especially the Cocteau Twins – the trance-like melodies and narcotic voice in a Grouper song swirl both prettily and mysteriously in their pastoral, psychedelic way. Otherworldly and blissful, this one-off, intimate show will be special.

Making that more so will be a rare performance from Sydney’s sublime electronic composer Pimmon, set to release his new, long-awaited album Smudge Another Yesterday in April, with Seaworthy also adding their own delicate beauty to the evening.

The night takes place Friday March 6 at Serial Space, 33 Wellington Street, Chippendale from 8pm. Entry is 12 dollars.

fag panic, kill a celebrity, squat club, anklepants

this show pretty much embodies the idea behind the club – 4 very different bands brought together for one night of ‘zentertainment’!

**ANKLEPANTS: the bad doctor lives life as a cuntdick with a faceprick. A one man dance band sort of thing spinning twisted danceable rhythms and beats. Dr Richard Facemaker has a face that can be programed to perform an exciting fruit bowl of dazzling movement. Badfacehead pndpndpndpnd.

http://www.myspace.com/anklepantsqwerty

**SQUAT CLUB: as a 4 piece consisting of a drummer, bassist, piccolo bassist and eukekele/guitarist, Squat Club are one of the most unique, talented and exciting bands to emerge out of Sydney in recent memory. Their style is akin to the amalamation of Eastern/Secret Chiefs 3 influenced polyrhythmic structures with early King Crimson, Pink Floyd and other assorted 60s and 70s psychedelic/progressive groups and a slight post-rock influence.

Squat Club combine brilliant progressions with mind-twisting rhythm changes and a beautiful jazz-tinged dynamic drumming feel akin to Jon Theodore’s work in Golden and The Mars Volta. If you’re a fan of Secret Chiefs 3, King Crimson or a range of avant-garde, post-rock or progressive genres, then this is something you wont want o miss. Squat Club are only expected to play a handful more shows before they disband.

http://www.myspace.com/squatclub

**KILL A CELEBRITY: the words that come to mind in describing Kill A Celebrity are caustic and agonizing. Somewhat renown and reviled within various Sydney scenes, Kill A Celebrity are a Sydney-based three piece playing inconceivably fast grindcore influenced by groups such as Discordance Axis, Agents of Abhorrence and Pig Destroyer. Expect a lively stage presence which has caused infamy at less spirited venues, coupled with raw, violent and wholly uncompromising music stripped of all pretentions.

http://www.myspace.com/killacelebritygrind

**FAG PANIC: All-singing all dancing tough arse ponies with hearts of gold. Electro-glam-tronic with the force of a tiger going into battle. We’ll accept payment in cake form or Steven Seagal’s Lightning Bolt Energy Drinks (preferably Asian Experience flavour). Please let us play for you.

BUM CREEK _ well, i (have) got nothing. they’re website is weird, at least one of them has a large beard, and they’ve been described as ‘tribal’. fuckin’ hippies? fuck no. fuckin’ rad! just come along and see/hear the enigma that is Bum Creek…i can’t articulate why, i hate fuckin’ keyboards.

CASTINGS _ yeah, again – what’s the point? though let me establish a few things. we’re not rich. we’re not hippies. sex and death imagery is boring, and no, we did not start a fight at TINA. next…

PREHISTORIC FUCKIN’ MORON _ also known as Jimmy James And The White Cranes (new CDR ‘The Stud’ out now on Spanish Magic…$5 at the show), the aforementioned moron is arguably sydney’s best and worst kept secret. a complete mess (a composed though absolutely unpredictable mess) of broken tape machines, broken turntables, a broken clarinet…are you seeing a pattern? if you’re lucky, he’ll sell you a tape (there’ll only be five of ’em but THAT CASSETTE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE), drink your booze, smoke your weed…then perform. acid.

CHROME DOME _ a new band featuring mr. shaun south. fucked up 80’s synths banged into melodic submission ala The Normal, Dark Day and Primitive Calculators (yeah…i know, but this shit’s for real ya know?) rad.

please message one of the bands or me for the show’s location.

CLUB CONSOLADOR DE DOS CAROS PRESENTS:

TIM OLIVE –  3 OF MILLIONS – KUSUM NORMOYLE

starring on our NEW IMPROVED PA SYSTEM!

TIM OLIVE (USA/jap)-     Osaka resident, born and raised on the Canadian prairies, began playing electric bass at age 12, fueled by 70’s hard rock.  A move to “the city” brought exposure to free jazz, early electronic music and the music(s) of Asia.   Efforts were made to accomodate these sounds within the range of rock instrumentation in the bands Nimrod and Soap-Jo Henshi, but eventually periodic rhythms and tempered pitches were jettisoned in favour of open forms, improvisation and exploration of the full sonic possibilities of steel strings and magnetic pickups, the number and diameter of strings varying periodically.
Extensive touring in North America, Europe and Japan has provided opportunities to play with a wide range of musicians, as well as long-term playing recording relationships with Jeffrey Allport, Shinichi Isohata, Fritz Welch, Francisco Meirino (aka Phroq), Nishikawa Bunsho (in the duo Supernatural Hot Rug And Not Used), as well as a duo with dancer Corrie Befort.

http://www.myspace.com/timolive

3 OF MILLIONS- Brave turns, textural layering and a strong sense of united phrasing direct the music from intimate storytelling to epic intensity. This is music for the laughers, and the cryers. The rawest of emotions are sure to be unleashed. Keep your ears peeled and eyes open. In 3ofmillions, the piano trio format is morphed in to a new ultra-sonic beast. Rising from the embers of eclectic musical experiences including Triosk, Trio Apoplectic, the Splinter Orchestra, Pivot, Pure Evil Trio, and Holly Throsby Band. These influences are all called upon to improvise music that can, and does, go anywhere.
“a brave new world of sound.” **** John Shand, SMH

KUSUM NORMOYLE – Kusum is an improvising vocalist/electronic artist/alternative pop musician based in sydney. She works with voice and electronics for performance and installation. Kusum is also performing at TINA this year, get in for a preview with consolador, this exciting new sound experimentor is one to watch.

message from lloyd:

Yeah that’s right, another email from some ‘struggling artist’ (read: some dude making horrible music that you aren’t going to come see anyway) about some gig that will either be cancelled at the last minute due to venue/transport/amp/zombie army/irreconcilable-dispute-between-band-member troubles or simply three people will show up to (the promoter, one band member’s girlfriend and some guy who just heard that Naked on the Vague were
playing even though they’re not).

Wednesday night I’m taking part in a revised version of Brendan Walls’ gamepiece “Chess” that was debuted at the NOW now festival at the beginning of this year.  Also playing are the Walls himself and James Iha from the Smashing Pumpkins.  Or Title Records, I’m not entirely sure.  Either way, about a hundred amps, little noisy thingies, a chess board and a banjo will be used to make transcendental blah blah blah you’re not listening.  WHO SAID POST-MODERN MUSIC WAS DEAD?

If you’ve actually read this far and are still interested then (what the hell?) it’s taking place at 405 hibernian
house (342 Elizabeth St, Surry Hills, just across from central station) and we’ll be playing with other collectives/bands/people/”musicians”.  No idea who because there has been precisely zero promotion for this event.  Big
surprise.

CASTINGS, KITCHENS FLOOR, 2779 + a mystery group that may involve members of Vincent Over The Sink

8pm opening…$8 entry

_Castings will probably play first.

_Kitchens Floor are from Brisbane. Matt (Look Pond, Minxx) and Julia play beautiful, eccentric, minimalist acoustic pop music. they are one of the best young groups in the country today in my not-so-humble opinion. think of Beat Happening, Neu and ”Hi, How Are You?” at a house party and you are close.

_2779
fuck! where do i start. trance-inducing but jaw dropping at the same time, this group from the mountains consists of Ben, Adam (Stasis Duo / XWave) and Matt (xNOBBQx / Stasis Duo). fucked up psych/noise/garage/punk/primitive/minimalist bliss. fuck No New York, come see 2779!

KITCHENS FLOOR – World’s nicest dude Matt (also da main-man in Look!Pond) and buddy Julia playing killer outsider folk/pop tunes. Bloody great songwriters! All the way from Brisbane. *Also playing at the where?house Saturday night.

CIRCLE PIT – Wall-o-sound heavy boogie rock in full force five piece mode. Bound to be the headbangers ball.

ALPS – Resident of Newcastle/the world Chris Hearn armed with a Yamaha Keyboard, Xylophone, Drum machine, cassette recorder, two hands, voice etc. Great lo-fi pop. Some songs are uppers, others are total downers.

PEE WEE – 100% fun!!! Teenagery punx with a surf/garage vibe featuring members of Straight Arrows and Dead Farmers. DA ULTIMATE PARTY BAND.

BABY COFFIN – Lloyd Honeybrook of the much hated Happy Go Hate Fuck on amplified sax and Brendan Walls of the much hated Menstruation Sisters on bass (i think??). Their first live show, got high hopes

GRAF ORLOCK, ROBOTOSAURUS, YEAH BEARS, SCHRODINGERS CAT
$10 8pm first band

www.myspace.com/graforlock
“Not only are Graf Orlock’s tunes uproariously nihilistic but concise and poignant, morphing the innovative savagery of Pig Destroyer and Brutal Truth with scathing punk cynicism. ”Corpserate Greed”’s two minutes and 18 seconds careen around three priceless Joe Pantoliano samples. In the movie he plays a variation of what expert ’80s action deconstructionists Ruthless Reviews call ”the Stupid Chief,” breathlessly berating Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s body count for necessitating, yes, ”detectives detecting shit” and forensic teams having to stick corpses ”back in the fucking
bags.” It’s trivial, silly blockbuster ear candy, but the decontextualization and shuffling of the dialogue makes for an artful, grotesque exchange that couldn’t be more metal. Pantoliano’s tantrums buffer neck-snapping blastbeats, bad cop/worse cop freakouts and curiously enough Hatebreed-style staccato, which is all that’s left by the militaristic outro. On an EP heavy on Alien worship, is Graf Orlock’s Bad Boys II nod simply wink-wink turd-polishing? Or is Michael Bay’s cash-cow clusterfuck like Reagan-era staples Red Dawn, Invasion USA or Commando representative of something
sociopolitically deeper and darker?”

early warning on this one as it’s a monday night.  please venture out for this if you can as the touring bands specifically requested to have an ALL AGES show in sydney and this was the only free night.

consolador de dos caras
la campana, 53-55 liverpool st, sydney
$10 8pm

this is the one we’ve been waiting for! and the line up has blossomed madly! first band will be on at 8.30 tonight so BE EARLY!

the laurels – the laurels are a 5 piece psychedelic/shoegaze band from sydney. first taking the stage in june 2006, the laurels juggernaut has accumulated accolades, guitar pedals and fans in approximately equal proportion.

Vialka – Vialka is an inflatable submarine that survived the commercial war. It travels unrestlessly around the world to explore the rich diversity of its cultures before it is too late. Vialka is a noisy comedy not ashamed of its own way by scorn or ridicule. It is an invitation to dance to steady explosive rhythms, terror melodies and experimental movements. It is a symphony for humble flesh through the high spirits of rock’n’roll. Globetrotting mavericks and dynamic two piece from everywhere and nowhere, Vialka unfailingly blow the minds of the uninitiated! With the world’s smallest and hardest hitting female drummer and ungodliest (un)bearded baritone guitarist, this band surpasses all expectation of the possibilities of popular music!

ian wadley – played with bird blobs, jandek , mick turner plus a whole list as long as your arm. have a look at the website for more info. Oh and also brother to greg of new waver fame

the question – Formed through a combination of too much time + equipment and lack of like minded individuals. no more sitting around >>>time to mess around.

as if these bands weren’t enough there will be other crazy shit going on in the front room:

TEN THOUSAND FREE MEN & THEIR FAMILIES

– 10kfreemen is the alias of Tom Gilmore, an Australian chiptune artist. Tom began making Game Boy music in early 2007 with very little exposure to the world of chiptune. His early minimalistic style developed with his exposure and increased involvement with the scene, along with the development of a live show to express himself to new audiences and expose a new genre of music to an unaware Sydney, Australia. http://10kfreemen.com http://myspace.com/thefloortom

DIVIDE BY ZERO

Often described as a mathematical anomaly, Divide is setting out togive a big lo-fi fuck you to mathematicians. ”Anomalise this, cunts” he has been heard to say, wielding a gameboy in each hand whilst shooting lazers out of his eyes. He also occasional designs flyers for No Frills.

PRZEWALSKI’S HORSE

In the wild, Przewalski’s Horses live in social groups consisting of a dominant stallion, a dominant lead mare, other mares, and their offspring. The patterns of their daily lives exhibit horse behavior similar to that of feral horse herds: Each group has a well-defined home range; within the range, the herd travels between three and six miles a day, spending time grazing, drinking, using salt licks anddozing. The stallions can frequently be seen sniffing dung piles to confirm scent markings, and playing out 8-bit tunes in Sydney.

ABORTIFACIENT

When not elbow-deep in recreational autopsy, Abortifacient likes to program Breakcore. Born in 2005, Abortifacient has taken his brand of Queensland Breakcore on a Japanese tour. Like a Gabber set at the Gympie Muster, Abortifacient’s live shows blend Psychobilly, Chiptunes, and Horror Film Fanaticism.

from kat thaw:

i’m really excited about this sunday!!! we’re having a big tea / cake party at jura bookshop, with music by loads of lurvely ladies and then a bit of a discussion about women in diy music and activism.

my good friend lena has come up from melbourne to grace us with her gorgeous sounds, louise has some new tunes for our listening pleasure, anna will tearour hearts out with her musical tales and i’ll play some little bits i’ve been working on.

there’ll be a huge spread of vegan cakes and treats! feel free to bring some along if you’re extra inspired. and we’ve plenty of tea cups to go around!

most importantly there’s going to be a discussion of women and queers in diy and activist communities in sydney, but more broadly as well. don’t be shy – come and contribute!

the whole thingo kicks off at 11am on sunday morning (27th april) so don’t sleep in too much or you’ll miss out on all the edible goodies! jura bookshop is easy to get to – a five minute walk down crystal street from etersham station, or a short bus ride from central station down parramatta road. it’s number 440 on parramatta road, just a block from where norton street meets parramatta road. just next to the flag shop and opposite the bald faced stag (pub) if that helps.
