DJ UNBREAK MY HEART
THE SADDEST PROJECTIONS IN THE WORLD

Teenaged emotional house diva Namine’s debut album “Celestial Love” (Bossman Records) is a Wagnerian outpouring of pathos if ever I saw one and we are ever saddened to launch his epic trance ballads in live form.

Joining Namine are sad sacks Golden Blonde who are soon releasing their debut album, “Gwen” on Tenzenmen.

Opening up the night we have a devastating lineup of writers revisiting the saddest, most embarrassingly overwrought poetry of their youth. There’ll be an OPEN MIC section for this, post in the event or sign up on the night for the opportunity to shed the very fabric of your soul onto an unsuspecting public.

All this on a Thursday, the saddest night of the week.

‘We steal secrets’ film screening.

‘Now, I’m going to be very candid, right? We steal secrets…’ So says Michael Hayden, the head of the CIA under Presidents Bush II and Obama. This isn’t a huge surprise: States have been keeping their own secrets and trying to steal ours for as long as we’ve had to live under them. But in 2006, they suddenly faced some competition. An international, online, non-profit organisation appeared, founded by an Australian and dedicated to providing a secure and anonymous way for those of us with access to corporate and government secrets to safely make them public.

Even before the massive historic leaks of US government data in 2010, Wikileaks had released some incredible information. Financial scandals in Iceland and Switzerland, corruption in the Kenyan Government, the membership list of the right-wing British National Party, oil scandals in Peru and our own Government’s secret list of websites which are illegal for Australians to view. Then in 2010 came the biggest release of private information in human history: 92,000 reports from the frontlines of the War on Afghanistan, 400,000 more from the War on Iraq, then 251,000 written by US Embassies around the world, including hundreds from Canberra.

‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks’ is a powerful new documentary film, written and directed by Alex Gibney (‘Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room’, ‘Taxi to the Dark Side’). It takes a critical look at the organisation and the two people most closely associated with it, Julian Assange and Bradley Manning. Featuring interviews with Assange, Adrian Lamo, Michael Hayden and one of the Swedish womyn who made the allegations of sexual assault against Assange, as well as current and former Wikileaks volunteers, there’s a lot here to keep us informed and angry in the age of the PRISM.

BROOK & WILTON DUO:

Andrew Brooks is a saxophonist, improviser and curator creating work which draws from jazz, improvised and experimental traditions. His music explores the intersection between composition and improvisation and focuses on a ‘collective-interactive process’ between the musicians. Amongst many things, Andrew is a co-director of the NOW now series and festival of exploratory music, a co-conveyor of the Splinter Orchestra, a co-presenter of the experimental radio program Shepherd Tones on Eastside Radio and a co-founder of the independent record label and creative music network‚ Listen/Hear Collective‚ an artist-run initiative. http://www.andrewbrooksmusic.com/

John Wilton is a Sydney drummer involved in rock, jazz, and experimental music scenes. He plays in Nhomea, Yard Duty, the Splinter Orchestra, Project Collective Unit, Ur 1st Luv, and a number of collaborations with various improvisers including Rishin Singh, Andrew Brooks, and Jeremy Tartar. He performed at the 2012 and 2013 NOW now festivals and has since become a co-director of the organisation. He was also recently involved in the Australian premiers of works by Austin Buckett, Cat Hope, and Peter Ablinger on New Music Up Late on ABC Radio.

HINTERLANDT is a German-Australian solo act juggling string and wind instruments, electronic sounds, percussion and effects. Composed parts are merged with improvised sections to create one piece of music and sound. Hinterlandt has released eleven studio albums on nine underground labels in five countries. Having already played in places such as Sydney, London, Melbourne, Bangkok, Berlin, Helsinki, Rome, Brisbane, Amsterdam, Lisbon, etc. Hinterlandt is looking forward to add Katoomba to the list.

SCHNEIDER TM is a traveling sound artist from Germany sponsored by Goethe-Institut. He has been touring extensively and putting out semi-electronic indie albums on City Slang etc. but he also did more experimental collaborations with Oren Ambarchi, Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Pan Sonic, Damo Suzuki (Can) etc. etc. His current set Construction Sounds is an abstract body of work based on field recordings. http://www.schneidertm.net/

“The power of the music – what it gives you and does to you, where it takes you – seems impossible, like sorcery or subatomic physics, considering its simplicity. It’s like the sun; and then the moon. How does it do that? It encompasses, more dimensional even than light, instantly, and not by force but sympathy. It changes everything.”

  • Richard Hell, Go Now

Contemporary music and art magazine World’s Only and Kings Cross gallery space Alaska Projects come together again in the ninth free concert in the MUSICAL ALASKA series, Tribes. Exploring the mystical and transcendent power of music and what it means to perform it as a group, Tribes will feature two very unconventional orchestras: improvised music stalwarts The Splinter Orchestra alongside the very new Alaska Orchestra in their fourth performance together.

Internationally renowned for creating spectacular sound and visual environments, Ikeda’s large-scale contemporary installation test pattern [No 5] is an immersive audio-visual installation inspired by computer programming data which converts information into barcode and binary patterns. Comprising five visual projectors that will illuminate a screen measuring 28 metres high and eight metres long, test pattern [No 5] will submerge visitors in an extreme illustration of projected and synchronized data and sound. In addition to test pattern [No 5], Ikeda will perform acclaimed audio-visual concert, datamatics [ver 2.0] on Friday 7 June 2013. datamatics [ver 2.0] is part of the datamatics series, an art project that explores the potential to perceive the invisible multi–substance of data that permeates our world. Using pure data as a source for sound and visuals, datamatics combines abstract and mimetic presentations of matter, time and space in a powerful and breathtakingly accomplished work.

Born in Japan, Ikeda has performed internationally to critical acclaim at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, the Barbican Centre in London, Grec Festival in Barcelona and the Singapore Art Museum.

Temple of Din (ISEA)

ISEA presents Lucas Abela’s Temple of Din, an audio arcade where sound generation – not scoring – are the games’ main objective; featuring.

BALLS FOR CATHULU (2013)
A pentagram shaped pinball game emblazoned with fluorescent graphics by the Rev Kriss Hades depicting the lord of the deep ones. A multiplayer pinball game with five players stationed at each of the stars five points. The outer triangular walls of the star are made from ten guitars with their fret boards facing inward into the playfield, while in the central pentagon ten pop bumpers are connected to a drum machine. These are all connected to various audio effects triggered by targets positioned throughout the game. So when the balls bounce off the strings distorted open tunings are produced while the pop bumpers accompany the din with a chaotic drum solo.

PINBALL PIANOLA (2012)
A Frankenstein experiment, combining the greatest musical invention of all time, the Piano; with the coolest amusement machines ever conceived; Pinball, to create an interactive sound installation like no other; ‘Pinball Pianola’ a musical device constructed by replacing the keyboard, hammers and front panelling of an upright piano, with a pinball cabinet butted up perpendicular against its exposed strings. Embracing high and low culture this instrument allows virtuosos and wizards alike to pit their skills in a game where musical compositions are created as metallic balls jettisoned into the game clash with the pianos resonating wires to make what Wired magazine called “terrible, beautiful music”.

When not found in the warehouses and alleyways – 20th May 2011

Group: ‘I Want Live Music Venues – So I Go To Gigs

A few bands headed out to Orange last year – I think folks are keen to play outside Sydney even if the audience is small.

Hmm – in the punk scene Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth have new vital music scenes and Melbourne bands travelling to there (and Sydney) say how much better it is than Melbourne. Get out of the pubs and make your own venues.

There’s a whole stack of things on tonight outside mainstream venues. I reckon I’ve been to about 6 shows in the last 18 months at regular ‘pub’ venues but I still manage to get to see bands every weekend. I love Sydney!

I’m mostly at Black Wire (blackwiretocommonground.blogspot.com) when not found in the warehouses and alleyways of Marrickville.

Red Rattler also has a good show tonight with UV Race, Holy Balm and Bed Wettin’ Bad Boys (not far from the international noise conference venues) – redrattler.org

gavin ahearn- manaslu!

Manaslu is a band that features some of the hardest funking musicians in Sydney playing original music and re-interpreting jazz classics. The band was formed by keyboardist Gavin Ahearn who has returned to the Sydney scene
after spending 10 years in the U.S., Europe and Asia playing with some of the finest musicians around. Jesse Ricketson on drums (the Bakery) and Matt Gruebner on bass (Orly, Lily Dior) will be laying the grooves down. Virtuoso
electric guitarist Richard Bornman will be exploring melodic possibilities with Bahram Saba keeping the whole project earthed on acoustic guitar. The musical emphasis in Manaslu is on the groove. As well as playing intricate original songs the band will be interpreting music from the jazz/fusion/latin archives – from the compositions of Thelonius Monk and Duke Ellington through to Bob Berg and Chick Corea.

Ourself Beside Me & The Gar – 1st July 2009

Cat #: 020TZM

Ourself Beside Me were first formed in 2003 by former Hang On The Box guitarist Yang Fan. Their line-up changed several times throughout the years until Yang Fan (the main vocalist and guitarist) met the then-still-a-drummer Xie Han through the internet in fall 2005, thanks to a shared interest in the British band, Television Personalities. They bonded immediately and started writing songs together. Xie Han started playing the bass and in 2007, through a mutual friend, EMI (who hails from Japan) was introduced into the group as the drummer. It wasn’t until the second half of 2007 that this trio began performing regularly, first at D-22 and then at other clubs in Beijing. Touted almost from the beginning by D-22 regulars as one of the most exciting and innovative bands to emerge from the Beijing scene, these three hard-charging ladies have swept everything before to become among the most admired and inspiring bands in China.

It is hard to describe their sound. They claim their inspirations began with the sounds from old 60’s and 70’s bands such as the Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett, Can, Tom Waits, Soft Machine and the Fall. There is no denying these influences but they are also heavily influenced by New York’s East Village bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s but with a very Chinese obliqueness to their harmonies and musical approach and the typical Beijinger’s bluntness. They combine the rhythmic sophistica- tion of bands like ESG and Bush Tetras with the eerie but jangly, sinuous guitar lines of Bush Tetra guitarist Pat Place and the strange harmonics of DNA. Amid their drawn-out sessions you can even sometimes hear the long, druggy patterns of the Doors. This is a band extremely sure of its sound and wholly dismissive of any attempts to mold their image or sound into a more pleasing outline.

Cat #: 022TZM

Gar’s music is some of the purest Chinese rock ‘n’ roll. Mixing the beautiful and sophisticated melodic structures typical of the best Chinese music with basic harmonies and a delight in shifting textures, their songs achieve the shimmering quality of folk-rock but with the hard edge that life in Beijing, with its rapid changes, destruction and reconstruction, has imposed on most of its artists.

The three members of Gar are guitarist/lead vocalist Zhan Pan, bassist Wen Jie, and drummer Wang Xu. Their standard power-trio format, ordinary equipment, graceful Chinese lyrics, and complete lack of stage posturing and fancy gimmicks make them different from most of the other bands in the scene. On the surface they seem very ordinary, but their shows are full of energy and intelligence. In recent years, a number of alternative genres have been expanding the definitions of indie music and rock ‘n’ roll for Chinese audiences, and along with it there have been changes in trends and fashion, but Gar have refused to follow any of the trends, continuing to explore their own sense of real music based on individual experiences. These are classic songs about youth and time, appealing to every generation and era. While the Chinese indie music environment gets louder, more challenging, and wilder, Gar continues singing their hearts out for their very own generation.

Femme Guild present HANKY PANKY – Hanky Code Party

Hanky Panky is a harking back to queer sub-cultures of the past as we delve into the rich history of queer semiotics & the socio-political reasons behind it. The party will be both fun & educational as we teach, learn (and unlearn) the ways we express our sexuality through gesture and dress.

Hanky-theme performances by Ginger Snaps, Zahra Stardust & Glittertrash.
Hankilicious DJs Tokyo Pink & Fisty Cuffs
Go-Go Dancers, Hanky Demonstrations and the very cheeky Dirty Little Slide Show, as well as Emergency Hankies for all you forgetful folk.

We invite all our guests to come flagging on the night for a bit of sex-positive fun whether you have one favourite colour hanky or a whole string of them you whip out magician-style from your bottomless back pocket.

Pre-sale tickets available exclusively from MaXXX Black, 1/264 King St, Newtown – $15/$20. We encourage you to pre-purchase your tickets as only a very limited number will be available on the night.

Hey Folks

I’ll be doing a wee showing of what I’ve been up to at Serial Space over the last couple of weeks on this Saturday July 4 from midday. Mostly I’ve been working on the wheelie bin…

For some time I’ve been interested in sound system cultures, particularly around the Caribbean and in South and Central America. Looking to build one locally, it occurred to me that a unique version already exists. John Jacobs <http://patchwrangler.net/> designed and built the original Wheely Good Sound System in the early nineties for use in urban actions/interventions such as Reclaim The Streets.

As part of my residency at Serial Space, I’m hoping to get all the systems in Sydney together. If you do have one, or any kind of portable sound system, mobile-robo disco unit please swing by around on Saturday July 4 at 2pm for some kind of enthusiasts meet / sound clash / road jam – we’ll take it to the streets, yes?

Bandwidth
Clan Analogue Festival
Red Rattler Theatre
6 Faversham St, Marrickville
4PM-late, $7

Clan Analogue is Australia’s oldest electronic music/audio-visual collective. Over its history, many of Australia’s foremost proponents of electronic-based music and visual arts have contributed but, in recent times, the collective has become a little dormant on the public front. While it has never actually gone away, the Sydney chapter of Clan Analogue is preparing to relaunch its public face with a mini-festival of live music, DJ-ing and VJ-ing.

Bandwidth features some long-term members as well as younger groups who have been diversifying the aesthetics of the collective. With some of Sydney’s best underground live acts in their ranks, such as Bleepin’ J Squawkins, Lunar Module, Karoshi, Telafonica, Valley Forge and Kate Carr, along with DJs such as Tigerlily and the godfather of Australian electronic music, Andy Rantzen, the re-emergence of Clan Analogue in Sydney’s music scene is placed to be wildly varied and exciting.

Clan Analogue was birthed in the early 90s warehouse scene and so is proud to be working with Red Rattler Theatre and its ideals of artist run initiatives, community creativity and its D.I.Y. ethos.

$10 entry with “Kullucinations” 3 inch / $8 without

16-year-old bedroom urchin Eugene Ward is probably better known through his instrumental hip hop outings as Mazzadius, which, at the tender age of 14, landed him on high rotation at Sydney radio station FBi, and launched beat-making enterprises with musicians as wide-reaching as Madvillain collaborator Stacey Epps.

Apparently bitter at the (musical) world he’d operated in previously, Eugene, under the new moniker Maitreya Kali, has come up with a contemporary bent on the kind of vinyl-based ambience that Touch and Kranky luminaries such as Philip Jeck and Keith Fullerton Whitman have made their names from. I’m hugely thrilled to have the opportunity to let the results of this, “Kullucinations”, onto the world, via 3 inch CD-R.

Also playing is the wonderful Cleptoclectics, the primary musical project of sound designer Tom Smith, whose contribution to Feral Media’s Powwow series revealed a juicy balance between pop sensibility and sampling genius. Clepto will have a 3 inch on HellosQuare later in the year.

FourPlay String Quartet cellist and host of Utility Fog on FBi Peter Hollo brings us some solo cello noises as Raven, whose appearances have been almost as sporadic as, and potentially of similar quality to Scott Walker’s output since the mid 80s. A 7 inch with American cellist Aaron Martin on sound&fury’s passeridae series will also arrive later in the year.

This event will be hosted by the wonderful Dirty Shirlows in Marrickville’s warehouse quarter.

Daiji Igarashi was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1983. Since about 2001 he has actively developed music centered on free improvisation, and expanded the possibilities of the electric guitar by innovating various sound effects.
For 3 years together with Yusuke Akai and Joel Stern in Brisbane, Igarashi was the co-curator of Audiopoolen Social Club. APSC is an artist-oriented, freeform, sonic but sensorially promiscuous beast that bewtween 2006-2009 ran over eighty DIY happenings in a concrete storage shelter in West End, Brisbane. APSC had been hosted various international and interstates artists.
In March of 2009, Igarashi was the executive producer of the three days music festival, Ready Aim Fire – Audiopollen Social Festival ’09 – held in Brisbane.

Martorell is a Melbourne based artist who’s work examines biological form and
its applications to the creation of sound based drawings and sculpture,
influenced by his work as a musician (Snawklor, The Hi God People).

Martorell’s process based methodology uses the gallery as a combination of
workshop and social meeting space where the gallery area is used as the basis
for a variety of improvised collaborations and performances.

Using the concept of transforming plant algorithms into musical scores, ‘Stolon
Tonals’ inhabits an imagined musical Diaspora where the rhythms and structures
of nature give form to a series of architectural models, sound works, costumes,
prints and drawings.

This is Dylan Martorell’s first solo show in Sydney.
He has previously shown internationally in both solo and group shows, in London
and New York.
